I bought a G4 500 upgrade card from OWC and am trying to run OSX on a beige G3 desktop . We have a 40 Mg ATA drive partitioned correctly for 8MB limit. OSX goes through the install process just fine but when it restarts after the install it just comes to the blinking question mark, or sometimes the screen just stays completely blank. I've have tried using XPF but with the same results. I've tried changing the throttle speed in XPF. I've tried swapping the RAM around The problem seems to be right after the chime when booting and something is just not selecting the OSX drive to kick it into the startup process. If I hold down the OPTION key when booting it will boot into OS9.2.2 I'm running out of ideas of what to try. The only other thing I can think of is to put the original G3 processor in. Thanks for any help Phil |

Been there, done it, did it and I still haven't been able to get OS-X uploaded on my beige (I have a G3 800MHz zif with a 800MHz L2 cache from Powerlogix installed). The latest lead I have is that some 3rd party ram will throw off OS-X from running in G-3's. Also, that caution about the ROYAL Voltage regulator is a very real concern (if you haven't already checked it out) because you can burn up the motherboard by using a faster processor. You might want to try www.lowendmac.com for installtion hints/help on the beige Macs. Also, I've found that my USB Card conflicts with my Radeon 7000 card (freezes up my G3) so I had to choose which one I could do without. For now I'm stuck in O/S 9.1 land. |

go into your sys prof in jag, hit the sys profile tabclick on the triangle called "product information" you will find info there. BTW, If it is booting, DON'T FIX IT!! your firmware is okay. |

The voltage issue was OK. We checked that out before putting the G4 card in. This is what did work. I put the ATA HD on bus 0 as Master and switched the ZIP onto bus 1 as Master and the CDROM as slave that worked. About the firmware. I assume since it finally is booting that might not be the problem. For curiosity how do you find that in OSX sysprof. It doesn't have as much info as OS9 sysprof. How can the firmware be updated if needed? |

Before you do anything, check to make sure your voltage regulator is NOT made by ROYAL. If it is, you could risk blowing up your new proc. THIS IS RARE, but they are out there........ http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/action.lasso?-database=faq.fp3&- layout=FaqList&-response=answer.faq.lasso&-recordID=33733&-search Okay, now that that is out of the way, check your sysprof, and let us know what the firmware version is.....Don't have it handy, but the earliest firmware has been know to have some issues with a jag install |

I had a USB and Firewire card and it hung. I've had problems with the USB so pulled that and it went through the install just fine. The Firewire is still in. I could pull that and try that. I used the Apple disk setup software on the 9.0 CD. I installed OS9 then upgraded in steps all the way up to 9.2.2 and made sure the whole system was working before installing OSX. It installed OK without XPF but wouldn't boot so tried the XPF route. The drive is connected to the ATA interface. Is that correct? Not sure what firmware the box has, what do I need to look for? Are there known problems wtih that, any upgrades? |

Do you have anything in the PCI slots? What software did you use to format the drive and which interface is it connected to? Which firmware does your Beige box contain? Marty PS Doesn't sound like a CPU issue to me. |
