installing os x onto external FW drive.....Trouble |

I am having difficulty installing os x onto a 10gb western digital FW HD using xpf 3.0a4. Everything works fine until about 10 minutes into the installing essential system software screen. The communication between the computer and external drive seems to stop, but the install continues without progressing, and the estimated time remaining keeps getting longer. If I leave it go long enough (about 2 hours) it will give me a message saying failure to install. How should I attempt to deal with this problem?? |

Check the cd for dirt or scrachs, as I've had this same trouble with non-FW HD's. Also you may want to check the FW drive for error's in OS 9 with Disk Warror or another tool. Also try to Format the drive or Erase it. Try it All. Also check the Throttle setting of XPF and set it higher or lower. If nothing else works try a test to the HD under OS 9 like copying your Systems Folder to the drive while playing a Movie if from the drive and see if there are errors. I've got one FW case that works fine on New World mac's ,but on old world mac's if you make a read or write over 2mb it frezzes. Your getting well into the install so I don't think the trouble is the FW to ATA bridge, sound like an error on your CD-HD-or a ram Error so also remove all but 128mb of ram an swap it in and out. |

Is there a pci card that you know is likely to work? Preferrably one with fw and usb. Why would the install of os x suddenly lose communication part way through. The problem never occurs at the same point of install. Are there any settings in xpf 3 that might influence my install in a positive way? Thanks |

Some of the combo FW/USB cards appear to have trouble in Mac OS X, even if they work well in Mac OS 9. It appears to be some kind of problem with the Mac OS X drivers. It's something that I hope to be able to track down eventually, but it may take a while. For the moment, some FW cards just won't work for booting on older machines, unfortunately. Sometimes it helps if the drive is the only thing on the FW bus. |

The brand name I am not certain. It's a combo FW/USB that came in an orange colored box, with two FW and 4 usb 2.0. All six ports worked very well with os 9.2 and I had no trouble with installing the card. There is third party software involved for the pci card, and for the HD itself. Hope this is helpful. For terryallen2003, are you using xpf version 3? If not then that is why the "hard drive is not bootable." Using xpf 3 will allow you to use the external drive as a bootup device with you internal HD as a "helper." Although I haven't successfully gotten much further then this step. |

I too am having trouble loading OS X 10.2.4 onto my FireWire external drive. I have a PowerMac 7600 with a Sonnet G3 500MHz card. The PCI card is FireWire only and has the brand name "agere" and what looks like a logo "Four Best Ports Connection". When I launch XPostFacto and then try to load 10.2.4 onto my 120Gb drive it says "This hard drive is not bootable". |

Can you tell me which Firewire PCI card you have? And is it a combo FW/USB card, or just FW? |
