My computer seems (is) slower... 10.2.8 related? |

Everything on my computer seems a lot choppier now... I originally thought it was my l2 cache not being used, but I don't think that is the problem anymore (unless L2cache can be "half used"). OS X acts about as fast as half the difference of l2 cache and no l2cache... Typing is slow, where it wasn't before (like in Safari), scrolling webpages, or anything, is noticeably slower, the text labels on the dock are slightly less responsive, status bars are choppy in their animation... everything is just choppier... My computer, btw, is a G3 upgraded Powermac 7300, with 256MB of RAM. I have ~560MB of free HD space (OS X has always worked fine with that amount before). Is anyone else experiencing this kind of problem? Or, does anyone know what might cause it for me? |

Whooo! I fixed it! I can't believe this solution didn't come to me sooner... since switching to OS X, my troubleshooting skills have not been getting much use... ;-) I just shutdown the computer completely, and switched the switch on the surge protector off for five seconds, then back on (effectively zapping the PRAM, since I don't have a battery)... Everything is good now! I knew it was loading all the kexts in, because at the screen at boot up, where it usually has very little text, it had lots of text, saying it was loading up a bunch of kexts... |

Remove the kext files you don't need. How do you know they are loaded? or sudo kextunload THE NAME AND PATH OF YOUR KEXT HERE. |

OKay,,, I've found the problem. OS X loads EVERY SINGLE extension at boot time. I remember it use to do this when I first installed it, but it fixed itself then, after a few restarts... But, I have tried that with no luck. I did fsck, permissions repairs, reinstall the bootx extensions (except it seeems to hange on the "rebuilding cache" part, near the end)... Anyone know what to do? |

I ran the 10.2.8 updtate when it first came out, then subsequently ran the small patch. If I recall, there was a few problems but for me there always is. I have a little ritual I do after an update: first I reboot and get a kp-almost always. I force-reboot and everything comes up, but I have to get into L2CacheConfig and reenable it. Then I repair permissions and, finally, boot onto another disk and run Norton. It seems to me that the machine (7500-300MHz G3) was kind of unresponsive until I repaired permissions. There seemed to be quite a few system files with bad permissions with this update. Wish I could remember more, but maybe this will help. Dan |
