OS X LOGIN. HELP |

ok, i know that I've asked this question before, but I have to mention it again as I am inches away from giving up on successfully using os x on my powermac 8500. I successfully reinstalled x again, after a clean install from os 9 cd and upgrades to 9.2.2. When the os x install begins (the "choose language" screen in this instance), I highlight the installer and choose "Reset Password." This brings up a screen that allows discs that have user names and passwords to have their passwords changed. Anyway, when I click on the user bar is shows three users, and they are listed as such: 1. System Administrator(root), 2. unkown user(unkown) and 3. my user name (myusername). What I then did was to change all of these three passwords to the same password, and wrote it down on some paper. I made sure to press the Save button on the installer password screen, and I resumed installing. Everything went smoothly and the startup screen of os x kicked into the username/ password login screen as I expected. Entering my user name and password as recorded before the install will not allow me into os x. I cannot explain what is happening here, but unless there is a way to completely bypass this login, I may be as close to os x as I will get. Suggestions??? |

It is possible that you are not logging in with the correct username / short name. IF YOU ARE VERY CAREFUL you can log in under "root" and use the password you reset to , then go to system preferences, accounts, login options, and change it to "list of users". I have known folks that have put in incorect login names as you describe. At least you know that the short name login for root is "root". Just don't mess around with anything else while the root user... |

resetting from the cd is of no use, I have tried this too many times. Something else is the matter here. is there a way to access x without entering passwords under the conditions I have described? I am not skilled in unix, but I am confident that a solution exists... somewhere. |

Boot from the CD again and reset the passwords again. YOU DON"T NEED TO REINSTALL AFTER RESETTING THE PASSWORDS! Just reboot from the HD and try that. Strange though... Marty |
