10.2.6 combo update no boot S900/G3 400 |

I've had 10.2 running nicely on my Umax S900/G3 400/1040MB for a couple of weeks. I even have Quartz Extreme enabled with the Radeon PCI hack. I downloaded & installed the 10.2.6 combo update, now I can't boot. It gets through the OSX splash screen, then I get the blue screen I've heard about and nothing. No login desktop. I booted single user, ran fsck -y a couple times, then restarted with no change in the result. Could the QE hack be responsible? I'm about to re-install the original 10.2, but I'm wondering if there's any know fix for this before I do. Thanks, Ch |

Hi, I've been confronted by the blue screen of death myself, in the end I wiped my disk. I tried running repairpermissions as well, DiskWarrior etc... the lot, nothing worked. However... I read on macintouch that one thing that can be causing this is a faulty NetInfo file. Perhaps booting from the install cd and deleting all users and then creating a new one might help (just guessing here). Another thing they mentioned on macintouch is that a corrupted font file of OS 9 (!) can cause this problem. Check this by dragging all font files from your system folder in 9 and then try booting back into X. Regretfully I had already re-installed X by the time I read this, so I never had the chance to try it, but hopefully it will help you :-) All the best, Jonck |

Ran DiskWarrior from OS9 which found & repaird a number of errors. Also zapped PRAM a few times. No change, still comes up to the blue screen and stops. Tried repair permissions booted into single user mode, then "sudo diskutil repairPermissions/". This resulted in the message "DiskArb couldn't be activated!" No clue what that means, but is it any help to solving this problem? I'll try the other method of booting from the Jag CD. I'll post if any changes. |

I don't think QE is causing you that much trouble, but you might want to run the uninstaller while you are fixing permissions from the CD boot. I have the actual plist path at home that you can do yourself, it is just a matter of changing it in text editor if you prefer doing it that way, just email me.... The PCI Hack just tells the QE engine where to go to find the video card, the change in the plist is actually overwritting "AGP" with "PCI", simple as that. I assume you have not changed any hardware or moved the position of the PCI cards?? You may also want to zap your pram. Do this on a warm boot, let it chime at least three times. At that point, boot into your OS 9 disk, run XPF, and re-install boot-extensions, and start-up stuff, double check your input is set to keyboard and output to your Radeon card. Hope that helps.... Good idea...running repair permissions. It is also possible to run them from when booted into single user mode. "sudo diskutil repairPermissions/" is the command to use. best of luck Will S |

First try booting from the 10.2 CD and run repair permissions. If that does not work run a disk utility such as Disk Warrior or Norton on the drive. There may be some corruption in the disk directory structure. |
