Anyone experience sound going away in itunes 4 when attempting to use the visualizer? It only comes back after a reboot. This seems to be a problem with the Sonnet 800mhz card since it didn't happen with my Nerwtech G4 400 cpu. I'm also guessing that it is realated to itunes using atlivec code. Maybe it has something to do with the way the cache is configured. I currently use cpudirector to configure the cache in X.2.8. System: 8500/800mhz/1G/InitioU2W SCSI card/Sonnet tango FW:USB card/Radeon Mac edition. Thanks Tim |

ITking, are the 2 sonnet cards BAD or is the 50mhz bus pushing some part in your 8500 to far? What do you have the bus set to with the Newer G3? |

Hi All: Am really curious to know who or what the unnamed company is! Sounds exactly like the problems I had trying to run a Sonnet G4 800MHz card in a pair of PPC 8500's. I was even having sound issues in OS 9.x! All cleared up, including mysterious crashes and USB problems I was having while running Virtual PC by simply going back to my NewTech 500MHz G3. Anyone want to buy a pair of Sonnet 800MHz G4 cards? They are as useless as a pair of lead bookends to me at the moment. Cheers, Lonnie |

You know, this does sound like the old audio studddder trouble with pci HD controllers. Try to play media from the Built-in SCSI bus and see if that helps. |

A certain un-named company won't allow me to copy the reply of their e mail to me but they didn't say anything about paraphrasing. So this isn't a quote. I have asked for permission but they have cut off corrospondance with me since I revealed mine was an accelerated Mac in a phone call. Here is what they said, paraphrased: There are occasional incompatiblities with upgrade cards and the way X handles sound. (I don't know if replacing the old processor would clear things up) and: The combo update helps fix the incompatibilities of some accelerator cards by changing how X interacts with pci cards and how it interacts with CORE audio. My crash logs with this company's card reveal that indeed, CORE was involved as well as the device manager. They know more than they are revealing and, before his supervisor cut him off, I found that they have not been able to consistently reproduce the problem in accelerated macs in X and that is why they are not supported. Based on this my reading is ,"There is something going on with sound, the pci bus/cards, and/or CORE when accelerator cards are used." If that is the case, sound may be a more persistent and difficult problem to isolate because of the many variables. |

Are you running the visualiser at full res and maxing out the size?? The visualiser burns resources up if you max it out. One little trick to get better performance is to enable Zooming in the access prefs, set the visualizer to a smaller image, then zoom it up to full screen. You should see an improvement. Could be a problem with Quartz burning up the bandwidth. Are you running PCI Extreme to enable Quartz Extreme???? |

Seems to be some trouble with sound and OS X on some Mac's/Clone's. Maybe you are on to something with the Sonnet G4, try to disable the L2 and L3 cache, and see if the trouble is still. Also the PowerLogix software should have a check box for "Write Thru" if it is checked uncheck it or vice-versa. Also try the same with Speculative Access check box. Try all the combo's of this. Also there may be a Log file that could help tell us what is crashed when you lost sound. Seem lot of folks with this trouble, but I have not seen it on my 8600 so I can't be much help. Look in /Library/Logs/ CrashReporter/ and post back any info that may have to do with sound. |

Similar problem here. Have the 800 Mhz processor upgrade in a 9500. My sound goes out playing an video, but It works in iTunes as long as I don't do anything else ( like browse the web). Jeff |
