It's true that printer setup and configuration, isn't as slick as it was with my old mac 512K and laserwriter 1.... But on the other hand, a huge array of printers, now can be used. Hopefully when the printer guys get there sh_t together, rendevous will get us back to where Appletalk had us 17 years ago... Marty PS there is Gimpprint, there is also. Try googling for OS X gimpprint and OS X ghostscript. |

I am guessing that you are talking about the open source drivers for cups printing in Jag. There are two sets but the easiest (though not necissarily easy) to install is the GIMP print package. As a bitch about printing in X in general, Apple has really left the area of printing in X to the user. Yes, CUPS and printing in X can work but it is not intuitive and not nearly as good as printing in 9, or 8.6 or even 8.1 for that matter. I understand that Panther will address this somewhat but what took Apple so long? I know of a lot of print shops and service bureaus that won't use X for this reason. They can't get their printers to work in X. That said, http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3 Follow the instructions, including the installation of ghost print, to the letter. Read the instructions several times before messing with it. If you have problems,as I did and ususally do, download "Print Center Repair" from Version Tracker. Once installed, you may or may not get full access to the options for printing to your printer (paper type, gamma, saturation of ink for inkjet printers, etc.) you may have to access these controls by using your browser to access the driver control panel. Enter one of the following and bookmark it in your browser so you can access it later any time you want to change settings of your printer; http://127.0.0.1:631/admin http://localhost:631/printers There are also linux drivers but if you find GIMP difficult, try the linux drivers. |
