XLR8 card was cause of my install problems |

Well, I put back in two of the OWC 128M DIMM's that were causing me grief last week with the XLR8 G4/450 card and the machine is completely stable under both OS 9 and 10.1.5. It's been running all night with AOL instant messenger (now there's a test for stability), IE 5.1, and Nanosaur, without any freezes or crashes. Now I feel stupid - all of my problems were caused by either the XLR8 card or it's Mach Speed Control software. All of the DIMM's are interleaved (current compliment is two pairs of 64M RamJet and one pair of 128M OWC). 512M seems to have improved 10.1.5's speed a bit and the ATI Radeon 7000 speeds up window and dock operations, even though I was under the impression that 10.1.5 didn't use the graphics cards for GUI purposes. But the speed improvement in the GUI is definitely noticeable with the Radeon installed compared to the old XClaim card. A word of advice after a month of painful experiences. If you own an XLR8 card of any variety and are experiencing freezes in either OS 9 and/or OS X, try using Powerlogix's G3/G4 Cache Profiler 1.5 (for OS 9) and the PowerLogix Cache Control X 1.2 (for OS X) rather than XLR8's Mach Speed Control software. Be sure to deinstall all XLR8 software (other than the virtual firmware which is required for compatibility) before installing the Powerlogix software. See if this solves the freezing problems. If it doesn't, I suggest that you bail on the XLR8 card before the vendors decide to not take them back anymore (see my experiences elsewhere in this forum). The vendors don't want any XLR8 cards back now that XLR8 is out of business. On to my next project...the 7200 with a Sonnet G4/400 card (notice, no XLR8 card in this machine). Tony |

Thank you for the tips, I will check my system folder again to make sure that I don't have other cache enabler present. According to Powerlogix the Cache Control X is the one for O'SX and to start classic in OSX they recommend creating another set of extension without G3/G4 Cache Profile extension to avoid system crashes. This extension is required when start from OS9.1. |

Make sure that you don't have more than one cache enabler tool loading at the same time since they could conflict with each other. Powerlogix's G3/G4 Cache Profiler 1.5 works fine under OS 9.x on the 9500 with the Sonnet G4 card installed. The Sonnet cache enabler software crashes the machine (ironic, huh?), and the XLR8 cache enabler (Mach Speed Control) crashes the machine. So, I use G3/G4 Cache Profiler 1.5 under OS 9. Under OS X, the Sonnet cache enabler seems to be the only one that works consistently. I tried G3/G4 Cache Profiler 1.5 but it produced odd results - negative CPU temp readings and settings that wouldn't stick after reboot. Haven't tried it since the OS update to 10.1.5. Will retry Cache Profiler 1.5 under OS X in a few days. Tony |

I was able to install Powerlogix G3/G4 Cache Profile 1.5 and Cache Control X 1.2 to my PM9500 with Newer G4 350 upgrade card but after adding two more 128 MG RAM I got a panic when booted into OSX. I reinstalled OSX with Xpostfacto 1.6, surprisingly the 1.5 did not work (it worked before). When I reinstalled Cache Profile 1.5, OS9 froze after loading the extension of Powerlogix's extension. Do you have any problems installing Powrlogix's software? |
