SCSI CDROM drives |

I am using Xpost Facto on a Beige G3. Though it is nominally a "supported" machine, I have found that I can't run OSX from a SCSI drive (I have a wide SCSI card and several drives attached) without xpostfacto. But I can't use any SCSI CDROM drives except those with Apple ROM. Writers work as writers but not as readers (can't mount a disk on the desktop from them). I'm using 10.15 and have also tried the SCSI helper available somewhere on the internet. But that even says it is for writers, not readers. Also the readers do show up correctly in the Apple System profiler...just don't mount any disk. Has anybody found a way to make non-apple SCSI CDROM drives work? I've tried several(a couple of plextor, a Sony) |

thanks for the input; this is interesting. I've seen this on two Beiges; I wonder if it has to do with the fact that I have not used xpost facto to install system 10 or that the Beiges are quirky, or that I'm doing something wierd. I've even had trouble with a SONY IDE CDROM drive. It works fine once OS10 is installed, but I can't use it to do the installation...I have to use an apple firmware IDE CDROM drive to install. And yes, the burners (plexter 12/10/32 and 8/20) will show up and write in toast, but if I put in a CD to read, it won't mount. I'll do some more experiments. Thanks, Steve |

I have used many non-apple CD-Rom drives, although in pre-beige G3's I have a 12X plexor, which works OK, but used to have CD audio issues (I haven't used it in a while). I have a Yamaha 2100S which rocks as both a reader and a burner with itunes & Diskburner support. and I have a Slot loading Pioneer (36X?) reader. All of the drive I describe mount and read CD's fine with no additional drivers or tweaking. I don't think the beige g3 is very different, although it only has 1 built in SCSI bus and it's a lame one too. Weird that you say the burners work as burners but not readers? Good Luck, Marty |
