Sound Problems 10.2 and 10.2.1 |

I sounds like several people on this board have had sound problems since upgrading to Jaguar. The symptom is that when Itunes is playing and you do something that requires lots of disk activity the sound starts to stutter and, if you don't pause Itunes, eventually leads to sound shutting down for all apps. The only thing that has brought it back for me is a reboot. Logging on and off doesn't fix the problem. Are there any Xpostfacto users out there that have seen no sound problems with Itunes? I found out by accident that, at least in my case (7500, Sonnet 800 with Sonnet tune up and XPF extensions reloaded, 10.2.1), the sound problem seems to be related to Classic. If I leave Classic off, the sound seems OK. If I run Classic, the sound gets killed after a few uses of Itunes or QuickTime. |

I have the similar sound problems as described in this post and threads. System is an 8500 with a G4 400 daughter card, Sonnet ATA 100 card. Has anyone made any progress in this area? |

I've got stuttering audio with playback from either iTunes or RealOne Player; stuttering is worse with both programs the more activity (disk or processor) that is taking place, and iTunes skips every 1.5 seconds or so even with nothing else going on. Mac OS X 10.1.5, 8500 with Sonnet 800MHz upgrade. I don't believe this is specific to 10.2.x. |

I get the aribtrate/reselect problem logs from the MESH controller, also; but my sound is fine and I cannot find any entry with "clip" in them. Only logs from IOAudioControl are something pertaining to value not set. But like I said, sound is fine. I have a G3 in an 8500. IOAudioControl[0x2cb4a00]::setValue(0x2ab7640) - Error 0xe00002bc received from driver - value not set! |

I'm getting similar problems with OSX 10.2.1 on my 7500. My ACARD ATA66 controllor is only part of the problem it seems. Is there an AV tweak utility for OS X, ACARD only has one for OS9. Even if I try playing files off of SCSI and network drives I lose sound or get lots of static. Lots of entries in /var/log/system.log that show: localhost mach_kernel: IOAudioStream[0x2000300]::clipIfNecessary () |

I get those Arbitrate/Reselect MESH errors too, and I get hard disk corruption as well. (Hence my Mac is down while I back it up so I can reformat and rearrange my SCSI.) |

It looks like this is a fairly common issue. Unfortunately, I haven't experienced it on any of my machines, so it's hard to debug. It's possible that 10.2.2 will fix things--I hope so. If any of the people experiencing this issue have entries in their system.log that appear to correlate with the onset of the problem, I'd be interested in seeing them. |

I have no ATA/IDE interfaces in my 7500. All I have is scsi and external firewire. Sound from any drive cuts off after OS-X has been running for a few minutes. I don't know what particular action causes it, but I notice when I reboot (warm or cold), the sound comes back. When there is sound (i.e., after a reboot), it is smooth from the scsi unless lots of disk and cpu activity, and always stuttering from the firewire. |

After having messed with the problem for a while, I switched OSX to a SCSI drive and put all my music on a SCSI. I was just using my ATA for storage of stuff I seldom accessed. Didn't matter. If iTunes (or any other player for music or anything else involving sound) was playing and I tried to access something on the drive, it would stutter and then stop. Under 10.1.5 I got the stuttering, though not as bad, but the sound never died. I like Jaguar so much that I bought another SCSI to add to the ones I already had, gave my ATA drive to someone who could make good use of it, and can now happily play music on Jag without even getting a stutter except under very heavy loads. All total stop-type stuff is gone. Not the best solution, but better than frustration everytime I would forget to stop any music or media before accessing an ATA drive. |

For the people that are using ATA drives that also have a SCSI drive available or even a second ATA drive, have you tried putting your music on your second drive to see if it has an effect on the problem? With my set up I have 2 Quantum SCSI drives and I keep my music on the second drive. The only time I have had problems is when I launch Virtual PC. My disk image for VPC is also on my second drive. Maybe that's why it's the only thing that screws up my sound now. |

Same here. just stuttering during disk access on 10.1, but with 10.2 adn 10.2.1 it stops altogether after a couple of seconds. I'm assuming it's something to do with the a/v stuttering problems caused by ATA cards on these machines in 9 as well, but there isn't a utility for it in X. I have a 7500 with a Sonnet ZIF adapter and apple G3 266 module, 336MB Ram and Tempo ATA 66 upgrade. Any way of applying the same fix as in OS 9 under OS X? |

I have a Power Center 120 with PowerLogix G3/300, Sonnet 66 ATA with 60Gb HD/Hitachi DVD and Acard Firewire/USB card under 10.2.1, basically as a server,. I thought it might be nice to use it to run iTunes in the background, but after 2 secs (usually - max 20 secs) of sound, it mutes all sound, and what is worse it freezes the mouse. Only a reboot seems to solve the problem. I thought it might be a non-compliant sound madule on the PowerComputing motherboard, so I tried again using a Griffin iMic. No change. Console reports a colon instaed of a full stop in the plist (but helpfully doesn't say which plist file!). I suspect the issue may lie deeper in changes in the way Jaguar handles sound, since the sound cutoff/frozen mouse issue also happens if I change the sound settings in system preferences. Anybody got the same issues and/or a workaround? |

It sounds like some people here have a much harder time with sound than others. I have an Atto UL2d card with my system on a Quantum Atlas 10k II and my sound only stutters or cuts out when something really accesses the drive hard. Under most conditions it's fine. I never had any problems prior to Jaguar. It sounds like people with ATA drives have a much harder time and some people had these problems before Jaguar. My guess is that there is some kind of bug with the sound that just shows it self more on computers with ATA drives. Is there anyway to find out if there are any error messages that could shed some light on the cause of the problem? |

I have a Sonnet G3/500 on a Pmac7500, which fits into the processor slot, along with an ATI Rage Pro, a USB board and an ATA board in my PCI slots. Sound works fine, so far, since I've removed my ATA drives from active use. As long as I stay with SCSI drives, interior and exterior, I'm fine. I don't seem to have a problem (again, <>) with leaving my ATA CD burner hooked up to the ATA card and running it. Under these conditions, sound is working. |

my $0.02: i'm running a 7500/SonnetG4/400 with 384MB, 80GB HD with Tempo ATA/66, with a 1st 7.8GB partition installed with XPF 2.2.2 and 10.2.1. with a fresh OS install, i get sound from the finder's preview pane for a QT file, but once i start up the QT6 player, the sound disappears all together and i get no sound at all from the system from then on. weird, i know, and i don't expect this to be solved any time soon, but just thought i would voice it for the record. frank |

I'd be interested to know whether the sound problem is a driver issue or somehow linked to the way sound is handled in OSX in general. Has anybody installed a pci sound card with it's own drivers and gotten sound to work? From my own experiences and from those of people on the board, it seems that the sound problem is somehow aggrevated by activity of other sorts (e.g. disk I/O). I've also noticed errors in /var/log/system.log that look like this: mach_kernel: IOAudioStream[0x1a66e00]::clipIfNecessary() - Error: attempting to clip to a position more than one buffer ahead of last clip position (0,2511)->(2,3a0). The errors occur before the sound fails, but not consistently. This leads my to believe that the errors dont cause the sound failer, but that they are symptoms of the thing that does. (I've tried to figure out what exactly clipIfNecessary does, but apple didn't comment that header very well. ) I'd like to look into this further, but my time is precious... does anyone know if the Sonnet installer/drivers has working sound? |

Saw something on Xlr8yourmac today about using Sonnet's older kernel extensions (1.1.3) in place of the new 1.1.4. Tried it. When I accessed an ATA drive with iTunes playing in the background, it actually did better (stuttered, but continued playing), but as I drilled down to deeper folders on the drive, the sound finally quit, totally. I think I'm going to just give my ATA drives to other members of my family and go back to SCSI, except for my CD burner. Just having it hooked up to my Sonnet card doesn't cause a problem. |

I have the same here. Under 10.2, sound sometimes works after a restart but quickly disappears. 10.1.5 was a little better for a while, but it eventually stopped as well. PowerCenter with Sonnet G3 500, Rad 7K, Sonnet USB, UltraTek 66 |

by the way, my 7300 (when it ran 10.1) never had the sound problems. I had the same setup as my 7500, except for the Mobo obviously. (same PCI cards, memory, G3 upgrade, & drives) I haven't got the 7300 running Jaguar yet. Nor does it seem I ever will. |

on my 7500, I have had this same problem with 10.1 , 10.2 , and 10.2.1 Except with me, it is a little more severe. My sound usually comes on when I first boot up, but shortly after the startup sound (I am using Xounds, and QuickStartupSound) I lose all audio. In 10.1 I would have audio for a little longer, and then get the stutter (usually in iTunes) and then complete silence for all apps.. and it's weird, iTunes will let you play files, but the timeline won't actually move. It stays at 0:00. But you can press play and pause all you like. |
