I recently got my hands on an 8500 and decided to upgrade a bit so I could check out Jaguar. I've used Macs before, but this is my first time owning one and I see I've picked a "great" way to experience 10.2. I've read through some of the messeges in this (and other) forums, but while I'm a relatively proficent Windows user, all this Mac stuff is new to me - so bear with me :) First of all, my system config: 8500 w/ Cresendo G4 800MHz. 512 MB Ram, Radeon 7000, Asante 10/100 ethernet card, and Sonnet Tempo Trio - connected to an IBM 120GB drive with 10.2 and a Sony CDRW (both ATA) The original Apple SCSI contains 9.1. 19" Sony's connected to the VGA and DVI ports on the Radeon. I tried XPostfacto, but wasn't having much luck with it (my lack of understanding I'm sure) so I used Sonnet's installer to install 10.2 on a 7.5GB partition. Problems are: 1) 10.2 freezes during startup or soon after. I was blaming this on the Radeon as I couldn't even seem to get through the install process with it in, but even with the card removed and running on motherboard video Jaguar freezes within the first 5 min. 2) Only getting a blank screen on the monitor connected to the Radeon DVI port (with ATI adapter). This is in 9.1 or 10.2. I can tell the monitor is receiving a signal because i can hear the click of it changing resolutions when i select different ones in 9.1...but no video at any resolution. 3) I'm booting into 9.1 99% of the time now because I've got no clue how to fix 10.2 at this point. On a cold boot, the computer will sometimes take a LONG time to start up (to get to the grey screen at the beginning of 9.1). If I restart as soon as I turn the machine on it boots quickly. I was glad to see some solutions for the other Radeon prob that annoys me - no video until 10.2's blue screen, but its gonna take a few rereads of those threads until I get a clue what I need to do ; ) Plus I need 10.2 functional first. I heard the Tempo Trio may cause problems in 10.2 when you boot of a drive connected to it. I haven't heard back from Sonnet on this yet, and I've got no SCSI drives big enough to try a 10.2 install on one. Thanks in advance for any help! Tom |

I talked to Sonnet today. They're sure the problem is the Trio and are hoping to have a fix for 10.2 out this week. |

The most common reason for freezes in Mac OS X is problems with memory. Though if it is always freezing at the same point during startup, then it is also possible that L2 cache enabling software is causing trouble. The reason that a cold boot takes longer to get to the grey screen is that it is doing a memory check at that point, and 512 MB does take a noticeable amount of time to check. I believe that Sonnet is working on a fix for the Trio for 10.2. |
