/dev not found? |

I think I saw a similar post in here somewhere, and now it seems I'm having the same problem. On boot, the system (10.2) reports: devfs_kernel_mount: failed to find directory /dev ...Which is kind of a problematic glitch, now, isn't it? Has anyone else solved it? My system is getting so crufty that it's probably time to consider a good, clean reinstall, but I just thought I'd like to figure out this problem for future reference. |

I just had this problem for unknown reasons. ( I do wonder if OSX doesn't like me using a folder as shared with OS 9?) Disk Warrior fixed it! |

"In theory" meaning "hex-editing your drive"? No thanks... :^P |

The /dev directory does need to exist on the drive--the kernel creates the contents on the fly, but the directory still needs to be there. (At least, I'm pretty sure that is true). Here's what I get for permissions and ownership. drwxr-xr-x 2 root admin 68 Aug 10 10:52 dev It is, in theory, possible to manipulate the file permission bits from Mac OS 9. But I'm not aware of a utility to do it with. Hmm. Perhaps I should write one someday :-) But I'm not sure it will be necessary--if the directory doesn't exist, then just creating a normal folder will probably work. |

Hmm, good point. I thought that /dev is created on-the-fly by the kernel; didn't think that the directory in fact needs to be on the hard disk. I will check. Could someone please post the correct ownership and permissions for /dev so I can see if I can hack this? Also, is there a way to tweak file permission bits from OS 9? Like with a ResEdit-type of utility? That would be a neat tool to have, although it could be a huge security risk... |

I guess one simplistic question would be whether there is in fact a /dev directory on that drive. You might have to use a program like ResEdit to look for it, as it may well be invisible in Mac OS 9 (I forget whether it is or not). If it is there, then the question would be why it isn't seen. In theory, it could be a permissions problem on the / node, I suppose. Or perhaps some kind of disk corruption that might be fixed with DiskWarrior or the like. |
