It looks like I've resolved the hangs on my Sonnet 800Mhz G4 enhanced 9600/200. After days of perusing this forum looking for hints, I ran across and article where Ryan suggests making sure the lower 3 slots on the machine are empty. I took out my USB card, moved the Rage Orion to the top slot, above my Apple 10/100 card and Adaptec Firewire cards, and haven't had a hang since. After 2 days of deliberate, harder the normal pounding, the Crescendo is finally starting to show its potential. Now that I have a stable "stake in the ground," I'm going to add back the USB card, since I suspect the solution has more to do with moving the Orion card than removing the USB card. If that stays stable, I'll add back the EDO 128MB RAM sticks that I removed because I thought they weren't co-operating witht the already installed FPM sticks. I'll post the results if anyone is interested. BTW in case anyone is wondering: I titled the thread as I did, because I'm not particularly happy with the solution: I'd feel better if I knew the exact cause of the problem, rather than relying on card swapping tricks. Still, this may help others with similar systems. Maybe the posters with the 8600 hangs can try moving their graphics cards closer to the CPU. /nct SYS: 9600MP/200; Sonnet 800Mhz G4; (2x128MB interleaved); MacOSX 10.2.1; Sonnet Tuneup (latest); original 4GB SCSI disk for boot drive; Adaptec 1394 PCI card with 2 60GB ATA drives; Apple 10/100 Enet card; Rage Orion 128 video. |
