DNS problem? But sound problem gone? |

I started having a strange OSX related DNS problem. First, my network setup: I have my network pane set up manually with a static IP address on the LAN, and I specify some public DNS severs there. My internet access is ATT cable thru a netBSD 486 box acting as a gateway and router. I use public DNS servers because ATT likes to switch their DNS server IP's to force people to use DHCP. I knew how to turn on DHCP on the WAN interface on the netBSD box, but I didn't know how to make it a DHCP server on the LAN to forward the DNS IP's to the LAN computers, so I have been using public DNS servers for about a year, no problems. Recently, after using 10.2.1 for a few weeks, I would get an error message, something like: "The specified server can't be found" while web browsing. Cached sites would work for a while, but all new URLs would suddently give that error without any hesitation. Other Win XP LAN computers are fine with the same DNS servers. So switching to alternate DNS servers or changing the search order of course did not solve it. At about the same time, Entourage would croak not able to find my yahoo mail server, or sometimes, Entourage would be OK for a few more minutes. The solution is to reboot Mac OSX (problems doesn't occur under OS 9), or as discovered recently, switch to a dummy network configuration under system preferences/network, hit APPLY, and then switch back to the original configuration and hit APPLY again (I guess switching to a duplicate copy of the real configuration might also work and save one of the switches, but I haven't tried it yet.). After that, everything is fine until the next random failure in the next half hour or hour (sometimes longer). The same solution works each time I have the problem. I don't know if this is related, but I think I quit having the infamous 10.2.1 SOUND PROBLEM at about the same time as this DNS problem started happening. Sound now works for hours at a time, whether I've accessed Quicktime or Itunes or whatever (haven't tried virtual PC recently, which might still kill it). I am listening to SuperTramp on Itunes as I sit, after having viewed a QuickTime video. Probably a coincidence, but I thought I should mention it. So something has changed, but who knows what? System Info: Mac 7500, Sonnet 800 (xpf->Sonnet tune up->xpf kernal extensions reinstalled), 384MB deinterleaved OWC ram (2 x 128 4k, 2x 64 2k refresh), IBM sca 80-50 pin 36GB on stock scsi (boot drive on one of 3 partitions), ACOMDATA 120GB firewire on an OWC card, IOGEAR USB 2.0 card, ATI Radeon Mac, Yamaha 6416S external scsi burner. |

I spoke too soon. The DNS and sound problems I'm having seem to be separate. By coincidence, I recently quit starting Classic routinely, and that seems to have helped the Sound issue. But when I recently started up Classic, the Sound problem returned. |
