I re-installed MacOSX 10.1.x into PM8500 with G3/400 upgrade card. I continued to install and update it to 10.1.4, and it worked well. Next, when I updated to 10.1.5, OSX cannot boot with following message in verbose mode. ... Automatic reboot in progress ... starting virtual memory USBF: 81.276 [0x205fc00] USB Generic Hub @2 (0x1200000) Nov 11 22:19:32 init: getty repeating too quickly on port /dev/ console, sleeping The last message line shown above is repeated in every 30 seconds, eternally. Before I re-installed 10.1.x, I have been using 10.1.5 on my system with no problem, except for system freeze and kernel panic occasionally. Now, what is wrong? |

It sounds like the loginwindow application is quitting immediately when init tries to start it. Here's an extract from "man init": getty repeating too quickly on port %s, sleeping A process being started to service a line is exiting quickly each time it is started. This is often caused by a ringing or noisy terminal line. Init will sleep for 10 seconds, then continue trying to start the process. If I understand the rest of the init man page correctly, it is trying to start a process based on the contents of /etc/ttys. Here is what appears to be the relevant line from my /etc/ttys (in 10.2): console "/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOS/loginwindow" vt100 on secure window=/System/Library/CoreServices/WindowServer onoption="/usr/libexec/getty std.9600" So my guess is that the LoginWindow.app is exiting early for some reason. The next question is what can be done about it. One thing you might try is renaming the relevant preference files to see whether that makes a difference. The two preference files that might be involved are: /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist It is possible that renaming these (to force Mac OS X to recreate them) might help. |
