Search Forum? OWC/Ryan? |

I understand this is off topic but for a forum that purports to help users I am shocked that there is not even a simple search function available. And, given that there is no search function, without even a clear database/catalogue/page listing of the forum it is IMPOSSIBLE to manually search through all the past postings to find things. I paid for THIS? Thanks Ryan/OWC for your wonderful software and the forum, I do support you in this, but to charge and offer so little isn't very helpful. |

OK, so it's been made clear that the search function is needed, and both Ryan and Larry have acknowledged the issue - which appears to be in the category of support and must be addressed as such. But, nothing definite at this point, since: ... it would be paid for by a new subscription to the forum/support area. Which also, if I understand, is the only legal way Ryan? can be financially supported in his endeavours. If, all that is correct, (and btw Thanks Larry, Ryan for responding), we look forward to all the benefits YOUR hardwork and OUR contributions can make to the new version of the "total" package! PS I think this really IS unfortunately confusing from a developer/user perspective, thanks for making the effort everyone, given the choices available. |

Well, I gotta say Ditto to ya'll. I wish there was a search feature.. The maybe I could see others with the exact same config I got, and the answers to their questions, and maybe a few solutions. In the meantime, i will not be so "layzie" and do some digging. Thanks for the product, BTW. I just hope I can get it to work with my computer.... -JB |

From: Larry O'Connor Date: Wed, 30 Apr 2003 14:10:45 -0500 To: anomia Subject: Re: Search Function for Forums? I will pass on the request for a search function. The support forum is there for questions and answers, granted much more efficient with a search function to locate past answered topics. The $10 support fee offsets the cost. It's really a shareware fee that adds the support forum access. With 3.0, which will add FW support, we may be changing it a little. Currently OWC foots quite a bit more each month than what is collected. Sonnet charges $30 for their OS X support which isn't even as complete or functional. $10 is a small price to pay for the OS X support on a pay if you like the product basis. :) |

Hi Group: Yes indeed, a search capability would be useful and would have prevented my question. My question is: Can you tell me how I might find the post that the individual made describing how he mounted an external USB floppy drive on the internal floppy drive sled and thereby mounted the USB floppy internally? I probably simply did not go back far enough but gave up after the first 20 or so screens. Cheers, Lonnie King |

Sorry I haven't piped in on this discussion earlier. I've been out of commission for several weeks for a couple of reasons, but I'm back now and starting to catch up. I understand that the lack of a search feature is a real frustration. It is a long- standing request that we really need to follow through on. There isn't a lot more I can say at this point, but I will keep you posted on developments. |

I'm going to reiterate my last salient point from the unformatted posting I made before: OS9 Helper also has a forum, aside from these 2 OSX forums does OWC have others? Would they consider a larger, more full featured forum format for EVERYONE? Thanks |

curtis - I have a simple workround for your problem. Buy a cardbus ethernet card from CompUSA (their own-brand card which costs only $20). Download the Realtek 8139 drivers from www.realtek.com.tw (there's a direct link on their home page). Works fine under OSX. There are other 8139 based cards on the market but they are all (much) more expensive. There is a problem with adding support for the 3400/Kanga built-in ethernet to OSX in that the relevent driver Apple_DEC21x4Ethernet.kext is not part of the Darwin open source distribution. It's only supplied as a binary, presumably because of copyright issues. Thus it would require the equivalent freeBSD or Linux driver to be ported from scratch to OSX. I agree with your comments about prioritizing the new features of XPF. |

It would be useful to know what items on the wish list are not going to be tackled on any forseeable timescale. As an example - I subscribe to this service to watch out for when the mod required to make Ethernet run on PB G3 Kangas that only have an Ethernet card as opposed to the Ethernet Modem Card - might be implemented. There is no point me using XPostFacto until this happens - perhaps it never will. In which case I ought to move to OSX by another route. No doubt there are other examples. So a (published) prioritisation of the wish list for mods to XPostFacto would be nice..... |

Sorry, didn't mean to sound age-ist. What I'd rather I'd've said: Wow, my paragraph text formating wasn't even kept, can you get more basic. Now I know why people do double breaks. or something like that. |

Thank-you for a reasoned, intelligent discussion of this issue everyone. This was what I had hoped for when I broached the subject originally. We all are contributing to a database of knowledge, for ourselves and quite probably for the customer base of OWC(possibly for Ryan as well); it is worthwhile discussing the improvement of a resource like this while it remains relevant. To be effective in making these wishes known, and what possibilities exist (given that we know who to speak to, and hear from) an open forum of exchanging ideas seems most appropriate. Perhaps we can continue this discussion and forward it at regular intervals to those individuals who people feel would be appropriate, and might respond? (I don't know what kind of numbers, strength-wise, we have that would be effective for petitioning, although it could be a start and I may be underestimating things) For many of us, I'm guessing this may be a side issue not worth the time or trouble, but as we've seen from the posts suggesting it, an inherent need exists for a search function apparently. Now if we can only communicate our need clearly to the right party, we may be able to effect the desired change here! PS OS9 Helper also has a forum, aside from these 2 OSX forums does OWC have others? Would they consider a larger, more full featured forum format for EVERYONE? |

Why not make the Forum data base part of the Inventory list that OWC's new Sherlock plugin searches? Would hurt to return Threads that may happen to have the product name in it's Title, or better, like eBay, in the Title and Thread Descriptions. Just an idea ... |

Nick - you've made the most important point in this discussion so far. Given - XPF is for free. But can you really charge bucks for software that only works with many ifs and but? The very reason this forum existis is because XPF only works under a number of conditions and with a specific hardware set-up, and people relying on support in order to get OS X on their machines running. But as Nick said - XPF and this forum are about business - for OWC. Because of it people like me dare to give OS X on their legacy Macs another go and along the way need to upgrade their hardware just for being able to install OS X, or for being able to run OS X with decent speed. And many buy their upgrades through OWC! Without the ability to run OS X the upgrade market for legacy Macs would be dead!!! Having this in mind, this forum's support by OWC could be better. I finally succeeded in installing OS X on my 8500, thanks to hundreds of $ that went to OWC and to this forum. But I had to flip through 40 pages of forum in order to find the postings relevant to my problems, and none of the gurus from OWC answered to my postings or even direct emails to them. Therefore - OWC, please, give us a searchable forum. It won't do your business any harm... |

I think that you both have hit it dead on. This needs to be taken up with OWC and see if there is any interest on their part. If not, start a forum where these issues can be addressed in a format that serves everyone better. |

willschou1 I'd just like to respond to your last post and in particular the comment :- "The newbies and layzies can just spend sometime digging though and quit the bitching" I'm certainly not a newbie to this forum or I wouldn't be aware of how much useful information lies buried within it. You should try putting yourself in the position of a new user of XPF and maybe you would realise how difficult it is to read EVERY post in detail to see if it contains info which is pertinent to your system/problem. So I suppose that by your categorization I must be one of the layzies. Well I refute and resent that suggestion. I log on to the forum regularly and whenever I have something constructive to suggest to users with problems I'm happy to do so. Even if that means reiterating advice and instructions I've had to enter more than once in earlier threads. As far as I am aware all the proceeds from our subscriptions to the forum have gone to OWC. It's in their interests to maintain this forum or they won't be selling many G3/G4 PCI upgrade cards. Why do you think they hosted it in the first place? I am at least as grateful to Ryan as you are for providing XPF. His decision to make it open source and free of charge is entirely his own. Personally I'd be glad to pay a significant shareware fee for it. If Ryan wants to charge for V3 then I'm happy with that. Please don't keep confusing requests for improvements to the forum which are OWC's responsibility with implied criticisms of Ryan. It would be nice if some of the OWC guys would respond to criticisms on the forum rather than leaving it to Ryan to act as their spokesperson. |

From day one, I have been somewhat disappointed with the level of support I have received. I had no real qualms with spending the $10, and would have even been willing to spend a little more. But, if I'm going to spend the money, I'd like some assurance that I will get something that works. I have yet to see XPF actually get OS X running on my machine. (Yes, I realize this probably has something to do with my machine, not so much XPF, but still...) I have done a little browsing to try to find info about the problems that I've been having, but to no avail. Having a basic search function would be invaluable, as it would allow me to search for things like 'AppleMacIO'. Yes, it's great that XPF is given away for free. But this support forum is not. So far, I have had very little return on the money that I spent to gain access here. An interesting question would be, what's to stop someone here from setting up a forum elsewhere that would support more functionality, and then inviting everyone to go over to that forum? Perhaps even loading the old data from this forum into archives there? How often would we be looking at OWC banners then? |
