Just to let you all know that Ryan has released an initial Alpha version of XPF 3.0 See the "Log" section for details about the new release and a download link. I'm currently testing the Firewire boot capability. I've managed to boot 10.2.6 from an external Firewire disk using a small SCSI disk as a "Helper". All seems fine so far. I'll post more information when I've done some further testing. FYI I'm using an 8600 with a Newertech G3/400/1MB CPU, 352MB RAM, built-in video, Sonnet Tango Firewire/USB1.1 PCI adapter and a LaCie 20GB Firewire Pocketdrive. Congratulations to Ryan for finally releasing v3 and even more congratulations for the fact that it works first time even as an alpha release. |

I've used XPF 3 for a few weeks now and I like the new features. On my PM8600 I used to keep 2 installs of 10.2 as I am allways doing hardware driver development. I crash X all the time and once in awhile I do damage to a HD and need to recover data and re-install X. Now the 8600 has lots-o-room for HD's but it runs 24/7 --reboots, and can be loud with 4/5 SCSI drive's spinning + I like to keep my backup drives unconnected while not needed to lessen the chance of data loss do to a crash while the drive is mounted. All this use to lead to lots of unpluging and pluging of scsi and power cables now all I need is 1 SCSI drive and if I crash X and can't boot from the disk I can plug in my PowerBook(G3 Firewire) and boot X from it's HD and recover data or CCC the drive to the SCSI. And I can switch boot drives in X now too! All this is hard to follow but the bottom line is it saves me ton's of time and keeps noise and heat down in my office. Thanks Ryan, you have gone much futher than anyone would have thought could be done, and helped bring more value to my old 8600. Your a good man. |

My apologies chibi_delenn Rereading your comments, I was wrong to read more into what you wrote. I for some reason read, "you were dumb to set XPF to . . ." when you neither wrote nor implied such. My sarcasm was unwarranted. I must have been having a bad day, and took it out on you. I am sincerely asking your pardon, as well as all those who had the misfortune of reading my foolish and tactless remarks. Again, sorry for wasting space in this forum. |

worldalex, If you haven't noticed, I said I wouldn't let *NDE* touch my disks, and that isn't "alpha level software". I also didn't tell Ryan how to code XPF. I simply pointed out that validating a partition by creation date is flawed (and useless if one does as I do and clones his working partition to a "spare" partition as a backup/restore). As for Ryan's other line of work, um, in case you haven't noticed, I've been here a while. I've seen his logs, and what others have said, and I've at times asked others to be considerate of Ryan's work as an attorney myself. I'm a very patient person. I did, after all, wait for what seemed like an eternity for XPF3a to even arrive, and I didn't complain that it was taking forever. I simply figured Ryan was doing more important things like earning a living. And regarding your final line to "us", perhaps you should take some of your own medicine and not talk down to others yourself. Do note that I pointed out a flaw. I did *not* criticize Ryan for not finding another way to validate a partition. If there is no other way to deal with that problem, I can simply unmount the "extra" partition. That's not very hard (and it's what I do now with XPF3). What I said was that XPF2 could see all partitions correctly and let me select which of the identical OS X HDs I had, yet XPF3 couldn't. I *do* know that Ryan basically did a ground-up rewrite for XPF3, and I have checked on Bugzilla and seen the numerous bugs opened up already, so I know very well that it is a (difficult) work in progress. I do my best to try to offer constructive criticism if I think even that is warranted. I did send my logs for XPF3 to Ryan. I went so far in fact as to make *three* separate logs, one for "all mounted", one for "all but Target HD mounted" and one for "all but Mac OS X HD mounted". It took me some time to do that. I know this is "alpha" level software. And if you haven't seen already, I keep spare backups available for just this purpose. That's the beauty of a 40 GB HD and a 200 GB HD in one mac. Alpha or not, I volunteered to guinea pig my mac out to any version of XPF3 that had new features to throw at me, just to others could see a finalized version sooner. I've been offering assistance and tech support on the mac for seven years online now, and I don't talk down to others for their mistakes or something they did that isn't "perfect". I simply either offer suggestions, or I let them know *why* the flaw really is a flaw. Oh, and lest you think I really don't have any patience - several years ago when VPC first came out, I helped somebody online learn how to install DOS 6.22 minimally from scratch so that they could "trick" the NT4 setup installer into thinking there was a valid OS to "update" from, all without having seen his screen *once*. I walked him through every step for eight hours straight. I used Hotline as the chat client as it had better chat features than anything else (and still does). My time, my effort, and I didn't expect anything in return. I help when I can. I suggest when I can. I point out when neither of the two aforementioned situations offers themselves to me. Other times I simply listen. And learn. So before you come here thinking you're better enough than others to talk down to them, take a look at yourself and how you speak as well. I am not better than you. I simply "am". - Chibi Delennâ„¢ |

Ah, that's interesting. It's probably the case that with the previous drivers, XPF was having trouble figuring out the partition number for the volume. I've seen that with some Firewire CD-ROMs, and mean to fix it, and perhaps that fix will help with some other firewire devices as well. |

tried using FWB to change the driver on the firewire drive. The drives weren't "greyed out" in XPF anymore, but when I tried to reboot it couldn't see them. anyone out there having success with the OrangeMicro card? It has 3xFirewire and 2xUSB. I tried unplugging the USB devices to see if that helped, but it didn't. |

"chibi_delenn" If you are so strongly concerned with your data, should you really be using Alpha level software??? As to the problems with XPF 3. If you feel so strongly that Ryan has incorrectly designed XPF, I am quite sure he would appreciate your assistance with coding. I am sure you have many better methods of deciding how and what should be coded with your many years of experience. If I am not correct XPF is open source. Being a full time attorney and only a part-time coder, he probably would love to have you help him make this app into a commercial hit. Just think, instead of doing it as a hobby (you might remember he is not getting paid, the fee you paid for the forum is supposed to cover the costs of server and administration of this forum), he could reap the bounty of millions we would heap upon him. Oh, and to you others, please keep it civil. I like to believe Mac users are genteel folk. : } |

well, it won't work for me... the drive is visible in the XPF window, but it's "greyed out". I'm using a partition from an OWC 45 GB Firewire drive that's connected to a OrangeMicro Firewire/USB card. |

voxxdigital, No way in HELL am I letting NDE touch my disks. EVER. That damned app caused me no end to headaches in the OS 7/8 days. Screw that. File Buddy might let me change the dates, but that gets irritating every time I "clone" to make a backup of my currently used OS X partition. XPF should *not* be assuming validity of volumes based on date. XPF 2.x can see all the partitions fine, so I don't know why XPF3 can't... - Chibi Delennâ„¢ |

Chilbi: Looking at your log files, the problem is that the two volumes in question have identical creation dates and identical sizes. My theory is that ASR must copy the creation date of the volume. XPostFacto gets confused because it assumes at some points that the combination of creation date and size can be used to uniquely identify a volume. I've opened a bug for this problem--here's the reference: http://www.opendarwin.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=899 |

Ryan, The email has been sent, with a compliment of three separate XPF3 logs, each one with a different set of partitions mounted as noted below: XPF3 Log ALL MOUNTED: Mounted Partition What XPF3 "Sees" Log Contents ----------------- ---------------- ------------ Defiant Defiant Defiant Deep Space Nine Deep Space Nine Deep Space Nine Babylon 5 Babylon 5 Babylon 5 Target HD NOT IN LIST Target HD Mac OS X HD Mac OS X HD NOT IN LOG Cargo Bay 4 Cargo Bay 4 Cargo Bay 4 XPF3 Log All mounted EXCEPT Target HD: Mounted Partition What XPF3 "Sees" Log Contents ----------------- ---------------- ------------ Defiant Defiant Defiant Deep Space Nine Deep Space Nine Deep Space Nine Babylon 5 Babylon 5 Babylon 5 Mac OS X HD Mac OS X HD Mac OS X HD Cargo Bay 4 Cargo Bay 4 Cargo Bay 4 XPF3 Log All mounted EXCEPT Mac OS X HD: Mounted Partition What XPF3 "Sees" Log Contents ----------------- ---------------- ------------ Defiant Defiant Defiant Deep Space Nine Deep Space Nine Deep Space Nine Babylon 5 Babylon 5 Babylon 5 Target HD Target HD Target HD Cargo Bay 4 Cargo Bay 4 Cargo Bay 4 XPF3 will see OS X partitions that DO NOT have the same builds. Those that do have the same builds are not seen or have only one of them seen (in my case, it's Mac OS X HD that's "seen", or listed in XPF3's UI, but Target HD that is written into the XPF3 Log, while the log omits Mac OS X HD. I hope this helps somehow. - Chibi Delennâ„¢ |

Ryan, The problem with regard to XPF 3 not "seeing" multiple partitions would appear to be not seeing multiple partitions with the SAME install of OS X. Both had 10.2.6 and were identical (one was a clone of the other, used as a restore). I will have to restore from the clone so that I have mirrored partitions again to test XPF3 and give you its log. To answer your second question, XPF did not show "Target HD" in the list whenever my "Mac OS X HD" had the mirrored install on it. Only when I either formatted the "Mac OS X HD" partition (separate HD, for backup reasons) OR I unmounted the "Mac OS X HD" partition before launching XPF 3, did XPF3 actually see and let me boot from my "Target HD" partition. Both partitions are on separate HDs, each is 7.5 GB in size (identical sizes), and each is within the first 8 GB of their respective disks. Interesting sidenote: XPF 3 cannot boot my Panther 7b53 CD (or any of the previous builds), but XPF 2.2.5 CAN. With XPF3, I get as far as where most people get the "still waiting for root device!" error, but in my case it's "MULTIMEDIA READ or WRITE FAILURE" over and over again, even though I can SEE that the drive does attempt to read the CD. XPF 2.2.5 lets the drive read just fine. XPF 3 does not. At least XPF 3 does solve one issue I've wanted fixed for ages now, but that Sonnet STILL CAN'T FIGURE OUT: booting from a >137 GB HD that has an 8 MB Cache Controller on it (<137 GB HDs with 8 MB Cache are fine). OS X is noticeably faster in the Finder and in general when booted off the nice and speedy 200 GB HD (WD SE). I have no firewire drives to test, unless somebody wants to donate a FW enclosure for testing (to be returned upon request obviously - I have a spare HD for such an enclosure). I want Panther running damnit! :) Shaguar's DVD Player is asstacularly SLOW. DVD is almost watchable, but still stutters bad when lots of movement/changes in the video, even with a G4 in this thing. 10.1.x's player was rock solid smoother than OS 9's player was, but I can't boot 10.1.x because the firmware for my Trio card that I must use to boot off a Large HD makes 10.1.x not see anything on the Trio at all. BG. And I absolutely REFUSE to use anything SCSI ever again (except my burner). IDE has been trouble free with OS X so far, aside from the large HD issue. I'll try getting you that log ASAP Ryan. Hopefully you'll be able to figure out just wtf XPF is choking on here. Also worth asking is if those testing with FW drives are using self powered drives, or bus powered drives. On older macs like ours, PCI bus power being drawn by such large amounts can cause problems sometimes. It is always best to eliminate this as a troubleshooting cause by using self-powered devices whenever possible. Chibi Delennâ„¢ |

What you're describing sounds like a bug I should really fix, but I can't reproduce it on my system (as you might guess, I've got many partitions with Mac OS X installed, and they all show up fine). When you say that XPF 3 doesn't see the partition, do you mean that it doesn't show up at all in the volume list? |

I had the same problem when I tried to install X on a 9G SCSI drive. It WOULD NOT install until I created an 8G partition on this drive. I tried everything I could think of to get this working prior to setting up the partition to no avail. YMMV, but for me the limit did apply on a SCSI drive. |
