is 10.2 freezing for anyone else? |

I like the features in 10.2 a lot (iCal, etc..) but the stability has me pondering a switch back to 10.1.4 (10.1.5 had problems remembering my dual monitor setup). I frequently (2-3x a day) get complete system lockups. It most often happens when using a web browser, but it's not limited to that- i've had it lock up using netinfo and entourage too. I had heard from others in this forum that 10.2 was more strict about ram than 10.1.x was. I figured that could be my problem, so I removed all my RAM and put it back in one at a time (no fun on an 8500...). NewerTech's GURU found a bad chip, so I took it out, of course, hoping that this would cure my problems, but it didn't. I had also heard that doing a clean install of 10.2 had helped others with this problem, so i gave that a shot. It was promising at first (a few hours, no freezes) but now it's freezing quite often. does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this? It's pretty irritating, cause i like 10.2's features, but if i can't get it to run, there's no point in using it. I had 10.1.4 running for over a month without a reboot- 10.2 is like going back to os 9 with all the freezes i'm getting.... |

gx77: I don't think it will resolve your problems completely, but if you're crashing a lot now, I suspect you will crash a lot less with the card removed. At least that was the case for me. Now it's sort of manageable (i.e., I live with it.) |

Huh. I'll try removing my ATI Rage Orion card and see if that helps. I hate running on the built-in video.... |

Huh, I had a problem with my G4/450 Powerwave, where it was crashing (freezing hard) after installing 10.2... I thought it was just me. Strangely, removing the Radeon PCI, and going back to the TT seems to have fixed it... I wonder if it's a G4/Radeon issue. I say this because I put the Radeon back into my G3/420 PowertowerPro and it seems to be ok there. Who knows. Maybe Apple has finally figured out a way to get us to upgrade? Marty PS Just kidding about the upgrade part(sort of). |

well, the sonnet extensions didn't fix anything- although i really didn't expect them too. I'm kind of at a loss as to what the source of our problems are. It seems like we've been over every possible cause, but we still haven't arrived at a solution. it's getting to be very frustrating.... |

It could be somehow related to disk cache. a browser uses alot of it and a normal memory tester (in 9) could not pick up on that. just another brainstorm jim |

i haven't tested the memory using memtest, but i used the latest freeze as an opprotunity to test the RAM using gauge pro, and it checked out fine after 25+ passes. on a side note, i installed the sonnet x tuneup, reinstalled the XpostFacto extensions over top of it, and my startup is MUCH faster. i haven't had a crash yet, but i'm sure that's just a matter of time... |

I'm running a dual monitor setup. I have a 17" sony monitor attached to a Rage Orion and a 12" apple monitor (circa ~1991) attached to the built-in video. I had the same problem building memtest. I'll try the version at http:// www.appleisp.com/~frisky after i make this post. i plan to report back w/ progress. Crashing is DEFINITELY not limited to browsers- i got my most reliable crashes (reliable in the sense that they were very very frequent) using photoshop last night. It seemed to be happening most often while i was using the side/bottom scroll bars to move around the document. I had noticed this behavior in IE as well, but it's not limited to those actions in either app. anyone else have similar experiences? on a plus side, i've browsed this forum for a while without a crash- that didn't happen before. |

Avit: I was finally able to build the memtest utility after downloading a couple of missing files from a BSD site. I'll be releasing the entire distribution (including the compiled program) to my website this evening. You can find the download link at http://www.appleisp.com/~frisky. Be sure to read the READ ME FIRST!!! file before running memtest. Tony |

I haven't had a chance to try compiling it yet. Does it have a configure script to be run first? If that doesn't work then the code probably needs to be ported to work with Darwin. I wouldn't be surprised, with something as hardware-intimate as a memory tester. By the way, it turns out that my system still crashes since I turned off Quartz Extreme, just far less often... |

Has anyone gotten the "memtest" source code to compile under Jaguar? It built fine under Solaris and RedHat Linux but it refuses to compile in Jaguar. I tried both "make" and "make bsd". The latter gets farther but generates the following message without completing the compile" make: *** No rule to make target `strsignal.c', needed by `strsignal.o'. Stop. From this message, it seems that all that's needed is a make rule for the strsignal.c file (I think, don't know much about make files). This could be a very useful tool to determine if memory issues are causing the freezes we're seeing. |

powderhaus: No, there are no crash reports for this event. It's a hardware lockup so it has no chance to even log anything. I seem to have isolated my problem. At first I thought it was my Radeon card, but after further testing, it appears that I've been running Quartz Extreme, which had completely slipped my mind. It's just so transparent! (Pun not intended.) I'm running on a single monitor from my Radeon card right now. I will try hooking up the second monitor to the onboard video tomorrow, and somehow I suspect it will work. Gosh I feel dumb. I should have figured that out the moment it worked when I disconnected my Radeon! I suggest you guys check for that. Hope this helps. |

Avit: I have a problem with crashes, but they have never been just browser related, and I have a dual monitor setup (on an 800 MHz upgraded 9500). Recently, I simultaneously maxxed out my RAM and upgraded my CPU. (What can I say, I'm an optimist. (:>)) After this I lost the use of one monitor, the 3dfx driven monitor wouldn't work, the TwinTurbo would. (They did work in OS 9 but on the TT the cursor was a splotchy rectangle and it's movement was restricted. Also the colour was often solarized.) Subsequently I bought a Radeon 7000 and am running both monitors off it with QE enabled. I still crash; the crashes are unpredictable and they are just as frequently in the Finder or PowerMail as in Mozilla. Hope this helps |

Call for responses: How many people with the browser crash problem have 2 monitors? How are they connected? My setup has one on-board and one on the Radeon 7000. I still don't know if the monitor/video card thing is the whole source of the problem, but I can say that things started working just fine once I disconnected from the Radeon and started using on-board video. |

No, you need to sign up as an Apple Developer (free), then you can download the CD image installer. There is a July version, and an August updater. I beleive those are still the latest. Install that and you can "make" anything. |
