Thanks for your help. I am not sure what was different but I went back and installed 10.1.5 using XPF 2.2. I then downloaded 2.2.4 and did an upgrade install. I was pleasantly supried to come back from dinner to find the cdrom open and the installer asking for disc 2 of Jaguar. Its running fine with no complaints. So I am very happy. Keep up the great work I really appreciate being able to run Jaguar on my 8600:) |

Try using the "Reinstall BootX" option in the "Advanced" menu of XPostFacto. The Mac OS X Installer installs its own version of BootX, and it is possible that reinstalling XPostFacto's version will help. It's odd that your machine sometimes identifies itself as AAPL,????. I'm not sure what could cause that. In theory, it should not matter, but it may indicate a deeper problem of some kind. |

I am still getting a kernel panic even with xpf 2.2.4. I can install 10.2 ok, then when it reboots, I get the kernel panic. Getting exception state (sv=0x01811500) Any suggestions? I've read through previous threads and tried different things, you can check my previous post on this thread for all the information on my system. One thing I have noticed. On a reboot it will say panic (cpu0) Unable to find driver for this platform: "AAPL, ????". But on a cold reboot it recognizes it as an 8500. not sure if that is important or tells you anything. Any help is appreciated, thanks very much. -John |

Thanks for the report. It looks like there was some kind of a glitch in the build--I'm not sure exactly what--but rebuilding it and re-uploading seems to have done the trick. Try downloading it again--it is the same name and URL. Sorry for the inconvenience. |

I was hoping that the new version would help me with my problem, but when I use the File->Install Extensions menu, I get an error that says 'Could not complete the "install extensions" command because of a program error' I allocated a bit more memory to the XPF application, but the problem persists. I've posted a new version of XPostFacto which I believe may take care of some of the problems identified in this thread. It includes a new version of BootX that cleans up the file loading problem that affected the version included in 2.2.3. Let me know if this new version helps. The URL for download is as follows: http://eshop.macsales.com/OSXCenter/XPostFacto/Download/XPostFacto2.2.4b1.sit |

I've now got a theory about what part of the problem may be. BootX allocates some memory for loading files, and it also allocates some memory for passing loaded drivers to the kernel. When trying to boot the Darwin 6 CD, I noticed that there was not enough memory allocated for the loaded drivers, so I gave it a little more (at the expense of the file load area). I though this was fairly safe, since I was still allocating 7 MB for file loading, and the largest file to be loaded was the kernel itself, and the Extensions.mkext cache, both under 4 MB or so. What I forgot is that on the Install CD's, the Extensions.mkext can be much larger, because it includes every extension, not just the ones needed for booting. So in some cases it exceeds 7 MB. This will result in the messages about com.apple.kernel.iokit cannot be found, or com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily etc. So what I need to do is alter BootX again so that both the file load area and the driver passing area get more memory. I should have a new version out this weekend. This should cure some of the problems experienced by people in this thread, though it may not necessarily cure all of them. |

I am I guess glad to see I'm not the only one having these problems. I have been using Jaguar as my main OS for a while now. I'm always trying new things and adding new software so as not to need to use OS9. I had thought that was perhaps the problem.I'm using XPF 2.2.2 as I have since it came out. The booting problems seem to be getting worse as time goes on. First verbose mode was needed to boot and now it either takes 3 or 4 forced re-starts and verbose mode or using Disk Warrior. Disk Warrior finds all kinds of problems which it fixes. It then boots fine 1 or 2 times and the problems start again.... I am using my machine a lot and doing video encoding lots of heavy use of the machine. I will have to try removing what maybe corrupted files as Ryan mentioned to see if that helps. |

I guess my question is are these extensions(Extensions.mkext) no longer needed after the install? Or do I delete them and then reinstall extensions using XPF? |

Well, very possibly it could be the faulty kext cache like Ryan hinted at. Considering XPF is doing murky stuff at install, the bug could just be getting brought out into the open. |

I have to say themore, that I have seen exactly the same garbled screen and panic(cpu0) with faulty kext loading, in a supported ibook (usb 2001 version) of a friend of mine ! He obviously do not use XPF at all... So I suggested him to mount XPF as to begin installation process, but after reboot, the problem persists... I suspect there's something wrong with OSX Jaguar installation itself and not XPF... kronos |

It occurs to me that there is one other possible explanation for these problems. If your Extensions.mkext were to have been corrupted in some way, you might get problems of this kind. So you could try deleting to see whether that helps. It is located at this path: /System/Library/Extensions.mkext |

These are very strange errors. As best I can tell, the BootX which XPostFacto installs is sometimes having trouble loading kernel extensions. One thing you can try is reverting to a previous version of XPostFacto, and using the "Reinstall BootX" option in the "Advanced" menu. Sometimes this appears to help. To diagnose the problem, it would be nice to see the verbose output from BootX. Unfortunately, capturing it is not particularly easy. If you set the output-device in the Open Firmware menu of BootX to your monitor, and then hold down command-v as the computer restarts, you should get the output from BootX on your screen. But there isn't any particularly good way to capture it (aside from taking pictures with a digital camera, I suppose). Part of the problem is that BootX is quite verbose, and some of the errors are normal. So it may be tough to figure out which are the significant error messages. Come to think of it, if you set the "throttle" to a higher value, the boot process would slow down, and you could read the messages (or take a picture) more easily. |

Yes, it is BootX or the kernel extensions you have in 2.2.3, as I have discovered the same thing on my own 8600 after upgrading the CPU with a joeCARD G4/400 (running at 450Mhz). After throttling, de- interleaving, and installing using 2.2.2, it works great. |

It sounds as though the BootX included with XPostFacto 2.2.3 is causing problems for some people. To summarize, BootX is the "bootloader" for Mac OS X. It runs very early in the boot process, and loads the kernel extensions and the kernel. It sounds as though in some situations it is not successfully loading the kernel extensions. That would result in errors about not finding a driver for the platform (if ApplePowerSurgePE.kext doesn't load), or a dependency like IOPCIFamily (if that doesn't load). The reason returning to a previous version of XPostFacto doesn't always help is that it won't automatically install an older version of BootX over a newer version. That is, if XPostFacto 2.2.1 sees that the BootX from version 2.2.3 is already installed, it will just leave it alone. But you can force BootX to install with the "Reinstall BootX" option in the "Advanced" menu of XPostFacto. So if you are "downgrading" to avoid this problem, that is what you will want to do. The bigger question is what is going wrong with BootX. I'll see what I can figure out. |

kronos If you have the same problem I had, you have to get rid of all the 2.2.3 stuff somehow. I simply formatted my drive, then ran 2.2.1. The best I can figure is that 2.2.3 installs something that doesn't go away by installing the 2.2.1 extensions. If you have attempted 2.2.3 at all (assuming my experience is typical), you are hosed. If you've got a drive that you can't format (important files you don't want to lose, for example), maybe Ryan can post a list of what gets installed when you run XPF 2.2.3. Then you could delete those files from OS 9, run 2.2.1, and you'd probably be in business. Ideally, of course, 2.2.4 will fix these problems and it might be best to wait. Best of luck. |

I have the same problem trying to upgrade my PowerbookG3 to Macos 10.2. It fails with this message: panic(cpu0) unable to find driver for this platform: "AAPL,3500". This happens with XPF 2.2.3 before installation. I tried XPF 2.2.1 and MacOS X Jaguar begins installation process, but again the panic happens when installer reboots after Installation. I tried to reinstall XPF extensions but no version 2.2x works. Always 'hanging here' message. Solutions? |

I'm writing this from 10.2.1 - thought I'd share my experience. It is certainly weird the way everyone's problems vary, even with virtually identical hardware. In my case, I've got a PM7500, Newer G3-300, on-board video, firewire card with OWC Mercury 80GB, USB 2 card, 6GB Quantum with 9.2.2 , and 18GB Quantum partitioned 8GB for OS X 10.1.5 and 10GB for 9.2.2 . I had pretty much backed up everything I needed and intended to just update my 10.1.5 partition. What I found was that I couldn't get the CD installer to run if there was any bootable OS on the target drive. The symptoms were that if I ran XPF 2.2.3, I would get the panic message along with some weird video banding horizontally across the middle of the screen. If I ran XPF 2.2.1, I would get the banding, no text, and a lockup. I figured I'd try a new install on my 6GB drive since it was a spare and didn't have OS X installed. I mainly use this as a rescue disk and for oddball storage since it is an older 5400rpm drive. I had the exact same symptoms with XPF 2.2.3, but with 2.2.1 I would just boot up into 9.2. I figured I needed to get rid of 9.2, so I formatted the drive, ran XPF 2.2.3 and got the same symptoms. Ran 2.2.1 and got the video banding and lockup like I did originally. At this point, I was still hopeful because of this thread and figured that maybe 2.2.3 was installing something that hosed things for good unless it was completely erased. I formatted again, then ran 2.2.1 and everything ran like clockwork. After completing the install, I ran XPF 2.2.3 to install those extensions and no problem at all. I hope there is enough information here to help Ryan figure out what's happening. |

I was having the same "panic(cpu0) unable to find driver for this platform" problem on my 7500 with a XLR8 Mach Carrier ZIF G4 350Mhz. Going back to 2.2.1 seems to have worked for me also but it would be nice to find out what differs with the later versions. John |

Ryan I think something is missing in 2.2.3. I had a 2.2.1 that I had downloaded a few weeks ago but had never used. I decided to give that a whirl. It works. The installer CD booted fine. So 2.2.1 has the stuff that is missing, while 2.2.3 doesn't. Now I have another problem that I'll post separately about Thanks Chad |
