now what i want to know is why his machine has problems while other 3400s work fine, there must be some kind of fault with his hardware because it does not seem likely that anything in OS9 would interfer with the instalation of OSX. I think that we should try to find everybit of information about his computer (hardware) and compare it to someone elses that works to see if there is some kind of difference Apple never told. i don't know the best way to go about doing this but the Apple system profiler is a good place to start, are there anyother software programs that could give a more detailed look at his insides? maybe Xpostfacto is not installing all of its extentions and is leaving one or 2 out, somehow. I would think that the tracker pad would have its own so maybe we could extract it somehow. I am just letting my brain run and typing any thing that comes up so it may not make sence but i have found it can help. Good Luck, (to use all i guess..) Jim |

Well, thanks. I don't see a practical way to proceed without further suggestions... (no external SCSI drive available...) |

Yes, I think you can take the lack of response as meaning that no one has a clue. Generally people are very helpful on this forum so if they have anything useful to suggest they will. This may not be of any help, but if you have an external SCSI disk and another Mac you could try installing 10.1.x on the external disk on that machine and then try booting it on the 3400. Suffice to say it IS possible to run 10.1.5 on a 3400 so in principle there's no reason why you shouldn't be successful. |

Does this lack of response mean that no one has a clue? |

Okay, here's the latest: I tried booting into single user mode first using command-s. Nothing happened. It went straight on to the installer. So, then I restarted, back into OS 9, and set XPF to take me into single user mode. That worked. I got to the 'localhost#' prompt. However, once there, nothing works. I tried typing.... nothing. Should the cursor be blinking? (It currently is just a solid white box. -> I just checked it on this machine, and, indeed, it isn't blinking. So that looks okay.) As I mentioned before, there are a couple of errors that come up during the verbose start up. They are: devfs_make_node: not ready for devices! devfs_make_node: not ready for devices! devfs_make_node: not ready for devices! devfs_make_node: not ready for devices! (Yes, it repeats that one four times.) Warning: AppleMacIO self test fails Oh, and the last one is IOBlockStorageDriver: Unable to flush cache on medie. IOBlockStorageDriver: Unable to flush cache on medie. IOBlockStorageDriver: Unable to flush cache on medie. (Again, it is repeated three times.) So, is this saying that there's some problem with the machine's ability to receive input that only manifests itself under OS X, but not OS 9 (as everything works fine under OS 7.6-9.1)? HELP! |

should be: cd /sbin kextload /System/Library/Extensions/AppleADBMouse.kext exit Don't know why that happened... |

I remember having this issue long ago, and having to boot into single user mode first (hold down command-S) and then manually forcing the ADB extension to load. cd /sbin kextload /System/Library/Extensions/AppleADBMouse.kext exit I thought I used to type "continue" instead of "exit", but that doesn't work here under 10.2.4... Give it a whirl. Marty |

I'm installing 10.1, and I've tried using XPF 2.2, 2.2.3, 2.2.4 and 2.2.5, completely initiallizing the disk, reinstalling OS 9, etc., between each attempt. |

What version of OSX are you installing? Also what version of XPF are you using? This problem did occur on my 3400 quite some time ago but was fixed by updates to XPF. (You can't install 10.2 on the 3400 yet because 603 processors are not supported but you're obviously not using that since it boots as fas as the installer). |

I'm having the same problem, only I'm using a PowerCenter Pro w/Sonnet 800mhz G4 PCI card. Everything boots fine, but then the curser has no response (even though mouse can click on items). I also have a message posted here, so you might want to check the responses. |

To follow up on my own question, I did notice that the instructions would seem to suggest that the problem is with the memory on my 3400. As I don't have any extra 128MB cards sitting around, is there nothing I can do without spending $70 to buy a new memory card? Or, is it possible that there is another source for this kind of behavior? |
