For some reason, there is a DDK USB 1.5.5f1 package that works better, but Apple doesn't provide it directly. Its there in the ftp server though. |

I have downloaded Apple's USB adapter driver as well, it just wouldn't work under 9.X, I am really frustrated. I guess I will have to stick to USB 1.0-1.1, damn man, I really wanted it to work, I have tried 2 different cards, but no luck with USB 2.0 under 9.X. Marty does ur card work under 9.X and 10? Marcush where did u get ur Ratoc card? My specs: PTP, Sonnet PCI 800Mhz G4, Ati Radeon 32 MB Mac edition, 800Mb ram and Adaptec 29160 SCSI card. Gabby |

Yeah, under OS9 you might need to install USB PCI adapter support from Apple's download section. Then again, sometimes it just won't go under 9. Gotta keep those ADB mice handy.... Marty |

I bought a generic "Made in Taiwan" USB 2.0 card with Ali chip from a PC show, knowing that it will probably not work in my PTP. Under OS 10.2.6 it worked fine but not under 9.X. Today I got another card made by Zonet in Taiwan, and in the box it clearly said it would work with mac 8.6 and up, but same problem, OS 10.2.6 is fine but OS 9.X, no way. It is backward comaptible and all that but.... . What do I do? |

USB2 devices can achieve pretty good speed in some cases... BUT it really isn't very competitive with FW in several ways. FW is a true bus system, so for example two devices can exchange data on the FW bus WITHOUT using the computer. USB2 is completely computer driven. Still Gabby point about USB2 is valid. It's cheap, there's lots of devices, and it's reasonably speedy. Personally I'm sticking with FW for externals and video stuff.. Marty |

I've been using a Ratoc Firewire/USB2.0 combo card for about a year and a half now. I don't have any USB 2 devices to test it with but it has worked without problems for the entire time that I've had it. I previously had a CompUSA combo card and a cheap Taiwanese combo card which were USB 1.1. USB worked fine but the Firewire side of the cards never worked well, causing lockups during file copies. The USB chipset of my Ratoc card is NEC. The Firewire chipset is Opti. |

Hi, This is a great thread, cause I am in the market for a new USB card as well. This is what I found out: USB 2.0 is not supported by 9.X, only by OS X. In many multi platform (Windows & Mac OS) cards it says USB 2.0 with Windows and Usb 1.1 under Mac OS X, I don't know if they are correct. But these cards are very, very cheap, cheaper than $10 in some cases (4port- 3 and 1) from Ebay. Last Saturday, I went to a PC show in NY (where I live) with my brother in law and picked up a generic "Made in Taiwan" 5 port ( 4 and 1) USB card, it said nothing about Macs but it was $ 12.99 so I figured what the hell..., the guy knew nothing about Macs either. So i brought it home and put it in my PTP/ SOnnet 800 Mhz PCI machine. It was an odd fit, meaning I had to force a little and when screwed to the body it was a little crooked. In any case I fire up my machine under OS 10.2.6, Viola!!!! It works, I don't know if its USB 1.1 or 2.0, but it worked!! So I reboot on 9.1....... NOPE! it didn't work at all. SO I have been looking for a new USB card as well and U will have to spend a little more money for Mac/PC hybrid cards for USB. I am looking at this one that CompUSA has for $ 29.99 and it says MAC/PC (1.1 under 8.6-9.X and 2.0 under 10.X), After i plug it in I will keep u posted. What I fund out at the show was that USB 2.0 is very fast, there were some devices @ the show that showed similar speed for both FW and USB 2.0, and the sales ppl were saying the same (not that they know any better). I also have a PC Firewire card that came with a Microtek Scanner at my work which I plugged in 10 days ago, it worked like a charm under 10.2.6, I haven't tried it on 9.1(since I don't have i-Movie in 9.1 and I don't have an external drive). My previous FW/ USB card which I had for 2 1/2 years is acting funny, crashes right away when I try to capture from my DV cam. The USB printer cannot print a whole print under high res so I figured I need to change it all. FW drives are great for video capturing, its the way it transfers, i think more sustained data transfer than USB 2.0. But I found out at the show USB 2.0 is catching up very fast, there were many many USB 2.0 devices. I also found out that the prices are very close (USB and FW), if FW 800 doesn't catch on USB 2.0 (or maybe USB 3.0 soon?) will definitely catch on and kill FW. Either way u cannot go wrong, both are cheaper than SCSI, though SCSI is the most stable and fast (in real terms) systems yet but for cheap storage...USB 2.0 or FW. CHeck this out, I got a SCSI 160 LVD drive (10K RPM) for $150 from EBAY about four months ago..... so figure out ur flavor. Gabby |

Marty, Could you share with me the name of the card, or where you got it, or it's on board specs. ie 5 USB ports (4 external, 1 internal) etc. So I can have an idea of what to look for. That reminds me what should I look for in a USB 2.0 that is both classic and X compatible, OHCI 2??? Thank you for all your help..... Jim |

It was generic "made in taiwan" kind of package. It does work both from classic and when booted into os9. It was 15$ too. Marty |

mjoecups358, Who is the manufacture of the NEC chipset USB card? Does it run in classic or Mac os X, (Backwards compatible), under 1.1 conditions. Thanks for the advise... Jim |

USB2 isn't supported in classic as far as I know... (I think that will never work). I have a USB2 card with an NEC chip on it, and it seems to work fine... BUT I only have USB1.1 devices to test with. YMMV. Marty Firewire is best for external drives. IMHO. |
