No, I posted that my 700mhz iBook is a lot faster then a fully moded 9600. The reason, why i disappeared when it was becnhmark time was because the test system was misleading. Mike |

Why do you have such a problem with people using there Old Macs with X? A while back you posted saying that a 500 MHZ Ibook was three times faster than a 9600 with an 800 MHZ upgrade but when it cam to posting benchmarks you disappeared. The upgrade process is a gradual one. No one goes out and buys everything at once. You get what you need when you need it. Obviously if you had $1,700 sitting around for computer upgrades you would use it for a new Mac. |

Most of us have had these OWM's for years, and over the time have added to them a bit at a time. I don't know about anyone else, but I can handle this, but ask me to cough up $2K+ for a new machine and I'd struggle. Also OWM have their advantages (built in Floppy, SCSI, ADB, Video/Sound I/O - if you have the right Models) now I know that not all of these feature are currently fully supported under OSX, but they all work fine under OS9. Working as an AASP I'd also go as far to say that the older machines are far more reliable than the newer machines. |

It's called tinkering. Lots have a desire to tinker and recycle something until it turns to dust. Just another hobby. Rational explanations don't apply here. Eric |

I have several friends that like to make up lists of things, it passes for activity. From your list I can see you either don't know how to shop for the best prices or you are trying to make a point by citing a worst case situation. and then like some villain from a bad movie you say you are here to "help". Be truthful you are here to make your point and that is not really helpful. Many people here have OW machines that they have had for years and have made improvements all along so the investment in going to OSX is minimal. To go out and spend the money you suggest on old equipment would be rather silly, in that case you are correct it would be most cost effective to by a new/NW machine, but for those of us with older machines and not enough funds to go out and replace what we have with new this is the best route for us. In many of our cases it would cost many thousands of $$ to replace all the equipment we have with new. In my case I figure it would be between $10 - 20,000 to bring everything up to the present, so even that $1,700 doesn’t look so bad, it’s all relative .... so enjoy your new machine, we will catch up eventually. |

Just on comparision on my iBook with 128mb ram, 16mb Mac Radeon, and 700mhz G3 combo drive model, I am getting around 30FPS (large graphics) in X. See the difference? |

Tim, I am not sure what you use your machine for but anything under a G4 500/G3 700mhz would be unsable for me. I had tested a G3 500 once in 10.1.1 and it was unberable. 256mb ram, eh not enough for me. I used to have 544mb in my machine, and I still needed more. But hey, if it works for you that is cool and all but none the less no matter how good of a machine you build out of an OWM you will never be able to play a game in over 30FPS in X. Heck, when I was testing out my friends Mac with a G3 500mhz Zif, 512mb ram, and a Radeon he was only getting 14fps in 9 (large graphics). So what are you getting in X, like 8FPS? Mike |

I am posting here for a couple of reasons. Mainly to help people, but I am also keeping an eye on the OWM news in hope of them releasing faster cards with the ability to overclock the bus speeds of machine. I am hoping that perhaps one day a compny will come along and deliver real world results. Mike |

I think OWMs are great for 9, but I would never use one in X. Of course, that is my opinon, but there are so many factors in X, as to why OWNs are simply not a good solution. Trust me, the amount of enjoyment I used to have with OWMs in 9, and for that matter still do. However, when I switched to X it was a comptly different game. I only use NWM in X for now on. Mike |

It is never cheaper, but if you don't want to lay out $1700, or relegate to the trash, and want to get more use from what was a $3000 machine, plus you can do it a step at a time. It's a hobby, and you're "list" assumes I want or need all of those features. I had a Rage 128 w/ DVD from B&W sitting around. 512MB RAM $107 G3/400 is fine $85 Could you have used UUB list command or broken it up so people can read that? do I need all the part numbers? that you just pasted in? Plus, I don't need G4/800 and if I did I'd wait until the price drops and the bugs are fixed. You can't boot from FireWire and don't need it (but I have lots of extra ATA and SCSI drives sitting around anyway, and FW cases). |
