Hey, I just noticed that the power light, the backlight, the Kensington FlyLight plugged into the Sonnet Tango Firewire/USB card) are all out on my Twentieth Anniversary Mac running 10.1.5. It is like a little blackout in TAM-land. Seriously, donde esta el Guru? Five weeks since he was headed to the 'rents for two weeks. I just think he got invited to Crawford, Texas for the month... Peace F |

Yes, I mentioned, in fact the power LED does not light when OSX is running. The machine is a Performa 6360 with a Power Mac 6500/300 logic board. Er... is that any way of making an alternative hardware switch fot the LCD light...? Just a thought. I think it's time to call Ryan... |

Someone mentioned that, in their 6500, the power-on LED on the front of the machine doesn't come on. Could this be related to the backlight not coming on the TAM? peace |

ScottMD- Re: running a DVD player off a SIIG PCI-IDE card. I have a DVD player running off a Siig card in a 9600. As Ian said, the problem is that through the Siig card the DVD player is seen as SCSI. The trick then is to apply a hack to the Apple DVD player to allow it to use "external" DVD players. This hack is DVD Player Patch at http://www.WormInTheApple.gr/macdvd/. Alternatively, you can use VLC (versiontracker) as your player, but as this does not use all the acceleration of the Apple player I found that it was too slow. Of course, this will help with playback, it will not help with iDVD. My guess is that unless you can find the hack that was (briefly) offered by OWC which allowed iDVD to work with an external burner, you are out of luck. Hope this helps |

NCT, one thing I figured out is that what most holds back the sysyem is the Aqua interface, due to its graphic enhancements. Maybe a fast display card would help a lot. Just a though. (btw, nice drawer...!) |

No, I haven't, but as I said in our e-mail exchange, I think it would be so slow that I hesitate to try it. Plus we rely on the the TV capability. If I can figure out how to do the hand-off from 603 to the G3 though, I may actually try installing one of the OSX supported USB TV tuner. That would be very interesting... /nct |

NCT, have you tried with the original CPU to make sure the problem is the G3? |

The SIIG ATA card's devices are seen as SCSI by the system, and iDVD doesn't support SCSI DVD-R drives. The only way to burn a DVD from iDVD is to have it connected to a raw ATA bus, like the motherboard or something running a Promise chipset, like a Sonnet card. |

just upgraded my TAM with a Sonnet G3-350 L2 MacOs 9.2.2 and has ethernet pci to Road Runner cable, usb card, and 128 mb ram courtesy of OWC. Now it is really useful for net surfing/email and TV. And i can port the sound out of my g4 beige tower w DVD-rw 105 pioneer for excellent playback. One question (misplaced on this thread, sorry)on the G4 beige tower which boots of a Siig ultra ata 133 pci card is that I cant use either the dvd player or iDVD app. unless I hook it to the slower 16.5 internal ata bus. I want to burn dvd's -any workaround to get it hooked up as a second master on the Siig-Acard? System Profiler recognizes it as a burning supported drive on the Acard. CD-rw works but I get a message that "Apple doesnt recog. it as a supported dvd player". |

I came back to this forum to see if anyone had any luck installing the Panther preview and am glad to see you are working on the TAM. Once the TAM is working, the 6500 won't be too far behind. I was inspired enough by voxxdigital's experience getting OSX running on his 6500 that I tried using his method to bring it up on my machine. I got a gray apple for a second, and then the machine locked up with a black screen with the block cursor in the top left-hand corner. 2 things: 1. I have a Sonnet L2 G3/400 card in the machine. Note however that unlike the more prevalent big-Macs (7xxx -> 9xxx) when you put an accelerator card in to a 6500 class, the original processor remains. Presumably, the Sonnet software extensions kick off the G3 and take the 603 off the system bus, so there is no contention between the 2. Obviously, there is no software to do this for OSX, (yet.) 2. The most compelling thing about the 6500 class machines is their integrated multimedia capability. My 6500/225MB is installed into a 6360 chassis which is installed into a drawer space in my kitchen desk. With a cheap flatscreen and decent speakers, it is not only a decent web appliance, but it's also my kitchen TV and stereo. (With remote control yet.) It would be really nice if OSX would support the multimedia capabilities of the 6500 class machines. I don't think I could go to OSX without it. I wouldn't mind doing some of the work to make it happen myself, but I need someone to point me in the right direction. I don't have time to go looking through Apple's extensive documentation, unfortunately. Good luck with the TAM. I look forward to using your results. ;-) /nct |

Hey Ryan ! Very good news indeed and... congratulations ! The TAM is definitely a Mac ahead of his time, but some features became obsolete in the meantime (like the bus speed). In fact my TAM is the only Mac still running OS 9. Maybe the next version of XPF will run Panther on it ?.. ;-) Keep up the good work ! --Manuel |

It's a PPC 603 originally, but with one of the Sonnet G3 upgrades installed. I still don't know how to get the 603 working in 10.2. But I have some hope that I may be able to get the G3 upgrade working. |
