Have encountered some sound instability running 10.1.4 . Occasionally while playing a game from my IDE drive I'll lose sound & have to re-boot, but It's aproximately 90% more stable than Jaguar. Hopefuly someone will figure this problem out & come up with a solution! |

Had sound problems in Jaguar so today I installed 10.1.4 & now my sound seems to work fine. I can even play games from my IDE drive with no noticeable sound issues. I'll post any new information if I encounter any problems. |

I have a 7500 w/ a powerlogix G3 400 (running 467) 512cache 2:1, 2 port usb pci card, Ultra-tek 66 ide pci card, Ati rage 128 & 416 meg ram. 2 gig scsi drive has just osx 10.2.3 on it & my 20 gig ide has os 9.1 & all my games. Upon osx boot up I have all sound including i-tunes but if I try to run a game from my ide drive I might have sound for up to aprox. 30 sec then lose it until reboot. I have an osx game called Alchemy that was originally on my ide drive & crashed the sound when tried to play. I moved it to my scsi drive and sound seems to work ok, but sometimes if I click the mouse at certain points of the game I'll lose sound again. I'm probably giong to try to load osx 10.1 & see if that fixes it or get a bigger scsi drive & put all my osx stuff on it including games & see if that works. I did try the suggestion of changing the onboard audio kext file per Anthony vu but still having problems. Any suggestions welcome! |

Just wanted to add my experience to this thread on the "loss of sound" that some people have while others don't. System is a a PM 8500 with a G4 400, Sonnet ATA 100 with a 40 GB IDE HD, generic USB card, and 160 MB assorted RAM. My system has sound until there is disk IO activity (described by myself and others in many threads on this board). When I installed 10.2 things got worse not better, the sound quits almost immediately after booting. This made me try a different approach that others on this board have suggested. I used an old 4 GB 68 pin Western digital SCSI drive attached to the internal bus with a 68 to 50 pin adapter and reloaded OS 10.2.3. It is slower but sound worked fine for quite a while, but not forever. I then tried dismounting the IDE drive from the desktop immediately after startup. For many days now, 10.2.3 is stable and all aspects of sound work, including speech and speech recognition. I am still testing this setup. I am wondering if systems with ATA cards and hard drives attached are the ones with the sound issue. From other posts, it seems that people who use ATA cards have other devices on the cards (not hard drives) have good sound. Any thoughts? Mike M |

I had same problem in my 7500 with the same SIIG ATA 133 card. It is based on the Acard 133. I switched to a Promise based card, the Tempo Trio and the sound problems have disappeared. iTunes works great and I can hear my DVD's audio again. By the way, is that the new or old Orange Micro, I have the old card which apparently has the Opticom firewire chip and thus my firewire performance is bad. The firewire on the Trio works great which is Agere chip based but the USB (NEC) does not work. Check the forum. Many others have had better audio with Promise based chips than the Acard |

I just installed 10.2.3 on my 7500 (first time OS X user) My system consists of a 7500/100 upgraded with... Sonnet G3 500/1Mb 576 Mb ram Orange micro USB / Firewire card SIIG ATA-133 card ATI 7000 The install went flawlessly, and the machine has yet to crash.... However this system is for the most part mute. Ocassionaly on restart I have the OS sounds and have once had sound in Outlook express through classic. Once sound goes away, it seems to be gone until reboot. |

I had the same no sound problem with 10.2 but not 10.1 in my 7500 with a Sonnet G4 400 upgrade, and a Sonnet Tempo 66 ATA adaptor card. The problem went away when I booted from 10.2 on a SCSI drive, and I could play iTunes, and get good sound with QuickTime movies. I could also access files on my ATA drives without killing sound, as long as I did not have iTunes open. However while iTunes was open, any activity in an ATA drive would kill all sound, including alerts, requiring restart. |
