No version of the program (2.2 and up) will allow a boot from any CD (X, X.1or X.2) ('Mac OSX Install Disc 1' can only be used as an installer.) Similar message with the name of the X install CD for X and X.1. Drive formatted with Intech, 9.2.2 installed on it already 400mb RAM. What am I missing? |

What about the original 2gig drive that came with the computer. Drive setup should run on there. Try installing to that drive. Try Pulling all you drives but one. Try removing all unnecessary hardware (ie second video cards and such. I know this all sucks, but it is worth it in the end. Have an external DVD-Ram Drive that can read the X.2 install disk and install to the X partition of internal goes fine but will not start up in X. Always reverts to OS 9 system folder. (Don't know how to put an internal drive on the external bus nor do I want to loose CD functionality in OS9) So far I've tried OEM cd drive, Yamaha CD/RW, and now with the DVD-Ram all with the same result. The earlier incarnation of the program allowed me to install the beta of X with no problem on the same exact drive with the OEM CD Drive. (I tossed the beta and did not buy a copy of X till 10.2. Now I'm stuck with unusable X.2 purchase. |

I have a PTP with a 500MHz PowerLogix G3 upgrade card. What I had to do to get it to install instead of booting to 9.x was (1) to move the source and destination drives from the internal SCSI bus to the external one. The internal one is the 10Mbps one on the motherboard, and external one is the 5Mbps one on the motherboard. My machine has no other SCSI or ATA controllers. (2) toggle the termination jumper on the CDROM drive (which is the original one with this machine.) As has been mentioned, X is more picky about SCSI termination thatn prevous Mac OSes. I tried to go back in to my posts/replies in this forum to recount the details for you, but the history doesn't seem to go far enough. Once installed you can move them back to the faster SCSI bus. The only issue I have found is that since I left the termination jumper toggled I can use the CDROM drive to read CDs in OS 10.1.5, but now OS 9.x doesn't recognize that there's even anything in the tray. I hope that helps. Raj |

It sounds like the problem has to do with the software used to format the drive you want to install to. It appears that the only formatting software that works for this purpose is Apple's Drive Setup and Intech's Hard Disk SpeedTools. In particular, people who have used FWB's software often end up with the problem you describe. |

Do not have a drive that will work with Drive Set Up. The problem is the machine will not boot to X, Install from XPost goes on the drive but the system does not start up into the installer. I can only boot to 9. (9.2.2 is the OS that is on the destination disk, installing from a 9.1 system) |

Wow, Of course your original message says the CD can only be used as an installer... which is exactly what you want.... Also 9.22 doesn't work for xpostfacto IME so try 9.1. Reread Ryan's (OSXguru) message, which explains the process clearly... Your posts do little to explain your problem, other then your anger problem. If none of my suggestions help, try installing to a HD that is formatted with drive setup from OS 9.1 if you have it... Marty |

The "Start Mac OS X From" menu item should say "Mac OS X Install Disc 1". You should see the warning "Mac OS X Install Disc 1 can only be used as an installer." The "Restart" button should be disabled. Below the "Start Mac OS X From" section of the window is a section called "Install Mac OS X To". The "Install Mac OS X To" menu should have the name of the volume where you want OS X to be installed. The "Install" button should be enabled. Click on that button "Install". Do not click "Restart" which is disabled and won't do anything. Do not use Restart or Shutdown from the Finder because XPostFacto does not modify boot settings if you quit it that way (or anyway except clicking it's "Restart" or "Install" button). The "Install Extensions" menu item only installs files that are needed to boot the CD. It does not change boot settings to boot the CD. You don't need to use that menu item because the extensions are automatically installed when you click the "Install" button. If you end up back in OS 9 without seeing OS X after clicking XPostFacto's "Install" button then you have a different problem and you need to give more info about your setup (what kind of drive, display connection, drive connection, what does XPostFacto say for the boot- device, boot-file and boot-command in the "Install Mac OS X To" section below the pop-up menu). |

The "install to" works just fine and extensions are installed but the "start from" button remains greyed out with the warning that the disk inserted can only be used as an installer (NO INSTALL CD CAN BE USED AS START UP). Restart after installing extensions on selected volume restarts into 9. |

You need to pick an "Install To" volume, and then use the "Install" button. The "Install" button should be available once you have selected an appropriate volume to install to. I'm planning to make the UI a little clearer in version 3.0--I realize that user expectations don't always match the way I have things set up right now. |

"Start from" pull down gives the above message that any CD can only be used as an installer and the restart button remains greyed out. (No volume can be selected as the volume to start up from!). Using original internal SCSI CD ROM drive! |

The XPostFacto.html file for 2.2.4 says 1) Insert the Mac OS X Install CD 2) Launch XPostFacto - Select the Install CD as the volume to start up from - Select the target volume that you want to install Mac OS X to 5) Click on the "Install" button Original internal SCSI CD ROM works best. |
