Greetings to all. My current machine is running XPostFacto 2.2.4 with a hacked NVRam file wonderfully. Running MacOS X fulltime now. I have fetched the drivers for my SMC1211TX Network Card (PCI) from the company. The tar'd file included a .KEXT file, presumably the driver. The readme said to just put it into the Extensions folder under /system/library/extensions . However, when I attempt to drag the file there (I can read files just fine), OS X stops and says that "extensions cannot be modified". It says the same for /system/library if I attempt to drag it into library (just to test). I am Admin.. I own the computer.. Have I locked myself out of the system or something? How can I get OS X to allow me to put the .kext file in there so I can use my networking card |

The owner of the extensions folder is "system" or root. Write access is given to no other user or group. Use the Terminal application to move the file. 1) Startup the Terminal application. It's in the /Applications/ Utilities/ folder. 2) type "sudo mv " (don't press return yet). The sudo command executes the mv command (move files) as the superuser (root). 3) drag the kext file onto the terminal window. This puts the path to the file into the command line. 4) type " /System/Library/Extensions" after that and press return 5) You will be prompted for your password so type it in and press return. The command line (including the prompts) should have looked something like this: [computername:~] yourname% sudo mv /pathtokext/thekext.kext /System/ Library/Extensions Password:invisiblepassword |

If you do not want to enable the root user. You can always add the file from OS 9 |

Too bad the company didn't write an installer for the file. If you enable the root user account and sign on as root you can add the file. |
