Computer Set Up: 9600 OS 10.2 XPF 2.2.4 384 meg non inteleaved memory (from OWC) VST Utratek 2.2.4 Firmware (latest) WD 80 gig (master on one channel) Toshiba 1202 DVD/CD-RW on 2nd Channel (master) 18gig SCSI (IBM DNES 68pin-->50 pin converter) on internal SCSI bus. MacAlly combo Firewire/USB 2.0 Radeon 7000 OWC/XLR8 Carrier Card with Six Slot Fix and G4/450/225 Ok, so here is a new one for me. Copying across my home network from my Lombard Powerbook (running 10.2.2) to my intenral IDE drive on my 9600, the 9600 freezes during copying. This does not happen when I copy to the SCSI drive. I ran the test twice turning off sleep on the Powerbook, and the problem still occurs. Anyone have any suggstions? For the network, I am using the onboad Ethernet 10baseT on the 9600, and the 100baseT on the Lombard - all going through a NetGear RT314 router. However, I don't beleive this is the problem as it works copying to the SCIS drive. Doug PS - Thank you Ryan for writing XPF. I acknowledge you for all the hard work you have put in to make this possible. But I must also admit that I sometimes curse you in the middle of the night for allowing me to try to squeeze some more time out of this now ancient machine, instead of just taking the easy road and buyng a new one. But then I get the machine to work -and a smile creeps across my face. Thanks again for this opportunity. |

Interesting. On one hand, it sounds like you've isolated the problem to the IDE controller. However, I can't remember seeing other cases where the IDE controller would cause a freeze. It is possible that the L2 cache settings have something to do with it. In theory, there should be nothing wrong with "write back" (that is the faster setting), but if switching to "write through" helps, then that is certainly a clue. Also, there are people who have had trouble with the XLR8 cache control software in the past--you might try switching to the PowerLogix software, or my L2CacheConfig. Also, you could try moving the IDE controller to a different PCI slot. It shouldn't matter, but sometimes it does. |

Ok, here is an update. The problem does not seem to be isolated to the network. I get random frreezes while copying. From Internal SCSI to IDE, From IDE parition to IDE partition and across the network. I did have the L2 cache program set to the faster setting (I think this is write through) and swithced it to the slower option (write back). System becomes sloww... Is this the problem. Any ideas to what might be cauisng this? Doug |
