Have a PM7500 512 mb G4800 Using XPostFacto 2.2.5b2 to boot 10.2.3 located on Maxtor 18gb u160 SCSI drive Originally had UL2D(1.4.4),Radeon7000(119), and OrangeLink FW/USB combo. Due to poor performance of FW from the Opti chip was looking for upgrade. Since many have had some sucess using Promise based ATA cards to get iDVD and larger storage though the TempoTrio(3.2.5) would meet both requirements. Since had trouble with sound issues with previous ATA card (an Acard 133) went back to SCSI as my main boot drives so not necessarily interested in using the Trio to boot from an ATA drive. The 3 card combination just will not work. They coexist fine in 9.1 and 9.2.2 (OS 9 helper) but when trying to reboot into 10.2.3,10.2.2, and 10.1.5 I usually get only a dark screen with amber light or a gray screen with green light. Rarely I get the following text: Claim failederr open deblocker pkg can't OPEN: pci1/ATTO,ExpressPCIProUL2D@E,1/@0:6 I get the same can't OPEN error when trying to boot from an external SCSI drive which has both 10.2.2 and 10.1.5. If I remove any one of the cards everything works fine. 7000 with Trio works great. Trio with ATTO and built in video also works. Just not all three together. Think problem has to do with setting the NVRAM though I get no error as to that. I have tried XPostFacto 2.2.4, 2.2.5b2, and 2.2.5b3 I have also tried to boot into open firmware but when all 3 cards are in, I get no text on screen. Hope someone has some ideas. With these 3 cards able to function together, I can get another couple of years out of this old Mac. |

Well I guess I'm giving up for now. Can't do anything to get my situation to work. It looks like it will always be 2 out of 3. Since I have more invested in SCSI at this time rather than ATA, will probably return the Trio since I still can. It is definately a problems with OF in our old world machines. Cards with multifunction capabilities like the Trio along with dual head video cards and 2 channel SCSI overwhelm the memory of OF. My last resort was to add a Rage Orion instead of the Radeon 7000 - no go. I then changed out the SCSI with an old 2906 Adaptec - no go. The Trio obviously is the main culprit when it comes to using memory allocation in OF. If Sonnet is right and this is an Apple bug built into OF, there is no way around it. I guess one could look for a 9500/9600 series with 6 slots so that one can get single function cards instead though I guess I am not doing to bad with a Radeon 7000/ATTO UL2D/FireWire-USB combo. |

Thought I let everyone know what Sonnet is telling me so far: Eduardo, The following comes from our engineer that writes the firmware for our cards. It doesn't really apply to your situation directly but it might give you a clue as to what is happening. The user should NEVER use the Trio and Tempo cards at the same time in an "old world" machine. Both cards do rely on a compression and the old Open Firmware does not release the memory properly. Therefore the second card Cannot be decompressed (due lack of available O.F. Memory. This is a known Apple bug. So if the ATTO card is doing what our Tempo card is doing in that it's using compression inside Open Firmware to load whatever variables it needs to load in OF, you'll hit that Apple bug. Apple fixed this in later ROMs but there is no way to upgrade a ROM in a Mac. So you might want to contact ATTO Tech Support and find out if they're relying on compression in their firmware and in Open Firmware. If they are, there's no solution to your problem. Any ideas or thoughts? I replied back that I did not know why my computer then can get through OF when booting into 9 but not when booting into X. Will see what their answer will be. |

The default catch! code=FFF00300 is basically an Open Firmware error of some kind. It means that there is a problem very, very early in the boot process--in your case, it appears to occur even before you get to the Open Firmware shell. One potential culprit would be the Tempo Trio firmware--you might make sure that you have the latest firmware installed. I suppose that the other thing that could conceivably help is moving the PCI cards around (i.e. switching slots). |

Is ZTerm on your SE set for 38400bps 8N1 XOn/XOff? Maybe try typing " ttya" output blind from either computer. Try using command-option-O-F in case auto- boot? false is not working. It's strange that your Tempo Trio (FireWire/USB/ATA card) says UltraTek100+ instead of UltraTek133. Did you install the latest firmware? I am using 3.5.0 although 3.2.5 should work as well as long as you're not using a > 128GB drive. |

Now using XPostFacto 2.2.5b6 This allows me to boot with my two SCSI drives, one with 10.2.3 and the other with 9.1 attached to my ATTO UL2D card along with my Radeon 7000. However, whenever I put the Tempo Trio into the equation and restart the computer in 10.2.3 the monitor comes on with a gray screen without the open firmware prompt which is my default now for troubleshooting purposes. I am now getting however some of the time the following line after line after line: default catch! code=FFF00300 I do not know what this means but I am sure somebody out there does. If I take out the Tempo Trio everything back to normal. I can still boot into 9.1 though with the Tempo Trio in place with the other two cards. Could this be the fact that the documentation for the Trio states that in 9 the card is SCSI but in 10 it is ATA. Also others posting here seem to say that the card reveals itself in a device tree as being the following: pci1/pci-bridge/UltraTek133/ etc...... Mine states pci1/pci-bridge/UltraTek100/ etc........ I will be contacting Sonnet in AM to see what they have to say. |

joevt Agree that 2.2.5b3 messes up the Radeon 7000 output device name. More specifics: OS 9 any version boots fine from drives connected to ATTO. At this time unable to get OS 9 to boot from Trio (working on this right now) All three cards are in place and I am typing this whilde booted into 9 on ATTO card. Summary of combinations tried to boot 10.2.3: ATTO (boot drive connected) / Radeon 7000 / Trio results in either black screen amber light or gray screen green light, ultimately have to restart the machine to get back into 9 ATTO (boot) / Trio / Built in Video works fine ATTO (boot) / 7000 works fine SCSI internal (boot) / Trio / Built in Video works fine SCSI internal (boot) / 7000 works fine SCSI internal (boot) / 7000 / Trio no go just like above SCSI external (boot) / 7000 / Trio no go just like above Occasionally I will get the error message mentioned in initial post on my main screen. Input Output Summary 2.2.4 pci1/pci-bridge/UltraTek100+/@0:6 pci1/ATTO,ExpressPCIProUL2D/@0:6 (of course these 2 depend on boot setting) pci1/ATY,RV100Parent/ATY,RV100ad_A 2.2.5b2 pci1/pci-bridge/UltraTek100+@2/@0:6 pci1/ATTO,ExpressPCIProUL2D@D,1/@0:6 pci1/ATY,RV100Parent/ATY,RV100ad_A 2.2.5b3 pci1/pci-bridge/UltraTek100+@2/@0:6 pci1/ATTO,ExpressPCIProUL2D@D,1/@0:6 pci1/ATY,RV100Parent/ATY,RV100ad_A@E Open firmware Summary: My setup at this time is that I do have a Mac SE/30 running Zterm connected to my 7500 with a serial cable on their respective modem ports. When I reboot into OS 9, I have no problems receiving terminal ouput. Everytime that I set XPostFacto (any version) to autoboot false (by clicking of the arrow) and set the input to keyboard and the output to modem and hit restart, the computer's main monitor will flash green then turn yellow then no output ever received on second computer. I cannot see open firmware booting into OS X. What am I doing wrong? The answer to this problem for me I know has to do with names and NVRAM. Please help me anyway your can. |

2.2.5b3 does not set the output-device correctly for Radeon 7000 so that the screen will remain black until it turns blue later in the startup process. There should be no problem with a three card combination since only two are ever used during boot, one for video and one for startup. You did not make it clear which of the Trio/ATTO combo was being used for startup. You also did not mention whether a 7000/ATTO combo worked. What are the boot-device and output-device strings that the three XPostFacto versions use? You'll see them in the XPostFacto window. Open Firmware tweaks are easier when you have a serial cable and a second computer with a serial port in case the output-device is not set correctly. You can also cut and paste text that way. I would shorten the output-device setting and experiment with the boot-device setting until it works. If you don't want to mess with Open Firmware then you'll have to wait for a new version of XPostFacto. Or try XPostFacto 2.2.4, turn off verbose mode and all the debug options, make sure auto-boot? is set to true, set input-device to none. If that doesn't work, then set output-device to none as well. With the Radeon 7000 you'll have to wait awhile for the screen to turn blue. |
