This is beginning to not be fun anymore,,, 7500 w/ Sonnet G4 800, 256 ram, Formac Proformance III 16mb video w/ viewsonic PF790, usb/fw pci card, 24x Apple rom cdr, adaptec 29160n w/ Atlas 10k w/ 9.2.2 on 3gb partition and a 6gb partition for X and XPF 2.2.4 thru 2.2.5b5. 9.2.2 on 3gig partition. XPF runs, recognizes inserted 10.2.1 cd, installs stuff on the target partition, then attempts to restart with nothing but a blank screen and no cdr activity. EXACTLY the same results by moving and exchanging ram, removing usb/fw pci card, removing video card, and even going back to stock components(1.2 gig hd w/ OS 9.1 and 2x cd on internal scsi, on-board video). Tried an xlr8 G3 w/ stock configuration. Even tried an old apple monitor?! Haven't been able to verbose login to retrieve data because I have to press the option key to boot hd. Below is the log from my last attempt.... Hmmmm. Well, XPF 2.2.4 works fine for me. This is another shot in the dark but is a 1.2 Gb drive even big enough for both 9.2 and 10.2? And could this be a SCSI termination issue? There is clearly something about this particular machine . . . . |

OSXGuru Thanks for your candid response re attempt to retrieve info in verbose mode. Yep, The monitor was set as output (actually it was set on the attempt that was logged..I'm positive) Odd it didn't 'see' that. Maybe that's a part of the problem? I'd appreciate your continued thoughts on my problem. I've got a PCPro box that I could try the install on, but from reading your FAQs, it sounds like that's not doable. I'm really stumped that my 7500 is now stock except for the G4 and I'm still having the same problems as when I loaded it up w/ all my hardware upgrades. It's running like a champ w/ 9.2.2, but I'm determined to get X on it. |

The vertical lines on the screen is something that the Open Firmware driver for the built-in video does--it's normal. But if you're not getting anything else at all, it means that there is a problem of some kind very early in the boot process. Unfortunately, I don't have a very good guess what it might be. I notice that your output-device is not set in the log, but I'm assuming it was set for some of your attempts, or I wouldn't have expected you to get anything on the screen at all. |

I recently installed Jaguar on my 7500/NewerTech G3 300. I went through a lot of attempts using XPF 2.2.4. What always happened was the CD would boot fine, but then I'd get a screenful of text complaining that something wasn't loading properly. I didn't write any of it down, so I don't know how similar it is to what you are logging. Anyway, to make a long story short, I tried the install with XPF 2.2.1 and it worked the very first time. I posted something here about my tribulations, but it's buried somewhere in the forum. I keep a copy of 2.2.1 available now and just plan on using that from now on for installs. Once installed, you can always load the latest extensions from Ryan. Hope this helps. Dan |

Thanks...In an effort to try and solve this, I've been using onboard video. All pci cards removed. I currently have the system stripped to original factory 4x cd, the original 1.2 gig fireball low level formatted to HFS+ w/ ADS from 9.2.2. I have 9.2.2 installed. No external devices except ADB keybd/mouse. I'm attempting to install 10.2, not 10.1 w/ G4 processor. 9.2.2 runs like a champ with all my devices. I've been asked to provide verbose loggin data, but all I get in the process are vertical lines on the screen. Otherwise, no matter what configuration I use, I ALWAYS get the same result....a blank screen w/ little or no cd activity even after 10 minutes. Any other thoughts? |

Larry, I understand your frustration. I have no idea what the log means. I can only offer simple suggestions. I have a similar set up: 7500, 1 Gb Ram, XLR8 carrier/GIF G4 400, and have had no trouble installing/upgrading OS X, save for noting the following: (a) it is essential that a monitor be on the onboard video for installation/set up, though you can switch to a video card later; (b) OS X 10.1 seemed to REQUIRE using the original 604 processor for installation, but 10.2x worked fine with the G4, suggesting timing issues during initial boot up; (c) it is essential that the partition for the OS X installation be an HFS+ partition; (d) only drives formated with Apple Drive SetUp or Intech Hard Disk Toolkit work. I note that you are not using the built in SCSI interfaces. Both internal and external worked for me, I recall there being issues with a number of the Adaptec cards. Perhaps switching to one of the builtin SCSI chains would do the trick. |
