DiskCopy fails to image OSX partition. Why? |

Because of the many, many hours needed to build and configure a Jaguar installation, I'd like to have a kind of safety copy of my OS 10.2 startup partition. So I tried to store a DiskCopy Image of it on the next partition of the disk. At about 80 percent of the progress bar the process stopped with "Image Volume Operation failed with error 2 (no such file or directory)".ÊÊÊÊ Question: Is it in principle possible to use an Image as a backup copy, or is this an old fasioned System9-and-lower-idea, not applicable to System X?ÊÊ If it is possible: how can I find out what causes the breakoff? I tried to find something with Symantec Disk Doctor 6.0.3, running in 9.1. (Symantec sais they have no System X version yet, but this one would be optimized for such Volumes too.) The doctor complained about 3 lost Hardlinks and offered to repair it. I said yes. Made no difference. I discovered a new folder in my System X Volume called "lost and found", containing three files, seemingly empty, but with names "hardlink 129911432", "..29348711" and "..590884695" respectively. Do I have to do something with these, doing the repair manually?ÊÊ Alternatively I've tried to make a simple copy of the volume, under Jaguar again. But then there was a complaint about some files that couldn't be read - if I'd like just to copy the ones that could. So I said "no" again.ÊÊÊ Do I have to start all over again? I've tried to stick to the rules (nothing manually, always the installer-way)... And as long as I don't try to make volume copies, everything works just fine... |

Hi, Ken, what you mentioned is part of the problem, but apparently it is much more complicated because of the underlying Unix file system. I followed Uwe's tip, downloaded Carbon Copy Cloner, tried it. The result is, right away, the wanted safety copy. Even bootable, which amazed me, because for the first installation my ATA-Disk made it necessary to make a less-than-8GB-partition at the start of the disk, the only configuration accepted by the installer. But the copy by Carbon Copy Cloner seems to be fully functional on the second, much bigger partition. The read-me-s of Carbon Copy Cloner offer interesting information about why my primitive classic methods caused nothing but trouble. Thanks Ken, Danke Uwe. Richard |

Hi, I'm not an expert at this, but such a problem might occur if the partition that you are copying is the system partition on which the system itself is currently running. In this case, it's possible that file locking, etc. might prevent the copy operation from completing successfully. I have more of a PC background than a Mac background, so this might not apply here. You might want to try booting from a system partition other than the one that you are trying to copy. I hope this helps. Ken |
