Serial devices problem in OF/10.2? |

Hello: When I downloaded the new version of iSync/iCal, I found out that 10.2.3 does not load the serial kernel extensions. This problem prevents Palm Desktop from enabling any serial connections. In searching for the serial ports definition in Open Firmware via Google, I see that it is /bandit/gc/escc/ch-a and /bandit/gc/escc/ch-b. But in ioreg, it displays them like this in the same level as escc rather than under it. Is this normal? I noticed that the serial drivers haven't been changed under 10.2.[123]. Anything that can be done here? | | | +-o escc@13000 | | | +-o ch-a@13020 | | | +-o ch-b@13000 |

You're absolutely correct. I did have kprintf selected. After I deselected all the debug features I had selected, the serial port extensions didn't exit and Palm Desktop allowed me to use the modem and printer port to sync--although I haven't tried sync'ing yet. Thanks! |

I did enable other debug outputs but not kprintf. I will uncheck those and see if it helps. Thanks for the tip! |

I think the ioreg output is normal. It is showing the IOService plane which is different than the IODeviceTree plane (use the IORegistryExplorer app from the developer tools to see what I mean). My B&W G3 and PowerMac 8600 show the same output. I don't know why the service plane is different than the device tree plane. One thing that can stop the serial driver from matching ch-a and ch-b is the kprintf debug option that you can change in XPostFacto. Make sure it is not selected. kprintf is used for dumping debug stuff to the serial port like stuff that gets dumped to the system.log except that different stuff gets dumped. The serial driver won't let itself be used if the serial port is being used for debug output. |
