Anyone using XPF & HP9600SE CDRW? |

Just wondering if anyone out there has been using the HP9600SE CDRW drive as advertised on OWC with a XPF setup. I'd be interested in any comments you have, as my 8600 internal CD is dying, and I was thinking about buying one of these ripping the drive unit out and replacing my internal drive. OS9/ OSX (+XPF) bootability is a major requirement for me. CD burning under both OS's would be nice also. Finally, OWC seem to indicate that it is Mac compatible, but list no driver software with it, so I am assuming that under OS9 it will work with the standard Apple CD/DVD Driver - Does it therefore have Apple Compatible Firmware ?? Any other suggested replacements most welcome. Many Thanks Brian Stroud. |

I have a 9600si (internal) as the sole drive on the motherboard's SCSI-2 connector in the following set up: 9500/Powerlogix 450-1MB/Atto PSC:IBM 10k 36GB & Atlas Quantum IV 18GB / ATI Mac Radeon. Runs great. No iTunes support that I know of but otherwise works well in 8.6, 9.x.x, 10.1.3 and 10.2.x. Works well with Toast. In OS 8/9 I use Charismac's CD ROM extension 1.59 (part of Discribe demo?) as Apple's CD driver through 9.2.2 will mount CD's at startup but will not remount CDs inserted after startup. The presence or absence of the Toast extension did not solve this problem. Bootable with command-option-shift-delete combo or startup control panel, but not with "C" key. Installs 10.2 with XPF. Use Ryan's cache enabler as Powerlogix's was associated with frequent freezes. Good Luck |
