the install button is greyed out and I get a message saying my hard disc is not formatted as an HFS Plus disc. What do I do now? Do I have to initialize and reinstall everything? |

What is your hard drive setup (how many, sizes, type (SCSI, ATA), partitions and partition sizes)? If you do a Get Info on your hard disc then you will find that the format says "Mac OS Standard" which is HFS. You have to use "Erase Disk..." in the Finder on the partition that you want to install OS X on and select "Mac OS Extended" format which is HFS Plus. If you want to keep the stuff on the hard disc then you need to back it up first. If you have only one partition, then you'll need to reinstall everything by booting to an OS 9 CD and re-initialize your drive using Drive Setup from the boot CD because the partition probably has your system folder and you can't use "Erase Disk..." on the partition that was used to boot the computer. If you use Drive Setup, make sure you select "Mac OS Extended" for the partition that you want to install OS X on. There are different partition schemes you could use. You should probably use Mac OS Extended format for all partitions unless you will be using System 7. 1 partition: a) Install OS X and OS 9 and the same partition. 2 partitions: a) Install OS X and OS 9 on the first partition. b) Install OS 9 on the first partition for booting and for the OS X Classic Environment. Install OS X on the second partition. c) Install OS 9 on the first partition for booting OS 9, and install both on the second partition so that the OS 9 on that partition can be used for the OS X Classic Environment. 3 partitions or more: a) b) c) same as above d) first partition for OS 9 regular, then another partition for OS X, and a third partition for OS 9 for Classic. The OS X partition should be at least 4GB but you might be able to get away with less if you don't bother installing some things like other language localizations. |
