I just watched the keynote over quicktime on my DSL line and I'm getting ready to leave the house and head downtown to the show, but I wanted to express my satisfaction with the announcements made. I can't wait to get a copy of iLife for only $49. That's a steal! Final Cut Express looks like a real winner. I wonder what the educational price will be? I bought the full Final Cut Pro 3 at the educational price ($299) and it is worth it but I think that the Express version is really going to be a hit at it's full price point. I'm writing this post in Safari too. It is exactly as it is billed to be. FAST!! Even faster than Chimera. The only thing it does not seem to have that I will miss is tabbed browsing. Hopefully that will make it into the final release. As a plus it does have pop-up blocking. I'm truly ecstatic that I can still run all of this on my Power Tower Pro. I'm sorely tempted to run out and get one of the new 12" Powerbooks though. However, financial discipline must be maintained and I'll continue to wait till next year. |

I've read that booting is also dependent on the type of drive that's connected. For instance, the SmartDisk 5GB will not boot due to its onboard firmware shutting down just before a boot is to take place. The workaround is to disconnect and reconnect the firewire cable just before it boots. This was applicable for Macs with built-in FW connectors, and I recall the information is on SmartDisk's website. |

Yes, the new Powerbooks look to be great. The keyboard action is different than the iBook or tiBook--quite a bit firmer, which I like better. And the aluminum case is quite attractive. The main thing I've been demoing is booting Mac OS X from a Firewire drive with XPostFacto. The good news is that it can work. The bad news is that, so far, it is only working with a limited number of Firewire cards. The Tempo Trio appears to work, as does a MacAlly Firewire-only card. But the MacAlly Firewire/USB card doesn't work yet, nor the Ratoc. I'm not entirely sure what the issue is. Basically, there are errors reading from the drive in the boot process, so that some essential things don't happen. I'll have to track done the source of the errors and see what can be done. |

I spent about 4 hours at the show today and got some time on the new Powerbooks. The 12" iBook has me thinking that I will realistically be able to do without a desktop machine as my primary computer. It will be intersting to see what future revisions of this line will include. The only thing missing at present is an L3 cache. The 12" Powerbook is smaller than my iBook G3 500 and a little lighter to boot. A definite steal at $1799. The version with a Superdrive is an even better deal. I talked to Ryan at the show. He was giving a demo to an older gentelman and showing him the wonders of XpostFacto. He's a very nice guy. Very approachable. He too is smitten with the new Powerbooks. There's still more work to be done on XpostFacto 3.0 before he feels comfortable releasing it. He couldn't really pin down a release date yet. I'll be going back during my lunch breaks this week to talk some more and see his presentation. On the iLive suite all I can say is that iMovie, iDVD, and iPhoto have really been worked over. Their functionality is markedly improved. I was able to put together a nice iDVD project with music and chapters in about 20 minutes of opening up iMovie. It was fun seeing a live demo of keynote also. Another great app. Too bad I don't really have a use for it personally. The Digital hub is really coming together. I'm a Novell and Windows LAN Admin and I just can not understand why anyone but the most dyed in the wool business user wouldn't switch. When someone asks me for recommendations for home PC's I never recommend a windows machine unless there just is no Mac software equivalent. |

marcush, I just got back from the expo myself (another SF resident). Safari is definitely a winner - hopefully it will be less buggy and more customizeable when it gets to the final release, but the bookmark management system is the best I've seen! iLife for $49 is a great deal as well. I am also very pleased that I can continue running all of this cool software on my PTP! Those new Powerbooks sure look nice, though. The backlit keyboard alone is making it very difficult for me to resist them! |

I'm using Safari as I write this. The test is sites like Drudgereport.com (has lots of popup quite often). Not one got thru the filter. Didn't even boink and go away. Just doesn't get processed, you don't even notice or miss it . Other products should also be awesome. I'm using the Safari on a iMac/400 and is just astonishing. Almost no gaps in functionality at all. Only one I could find is that it won't fork to Windows Media Player yet. Otherwise is flawless in the fashion that I use it. Also starts fast, and shutsdown clean, BAM it's gone! |

I totally agree about iLife and FCE. I am at work on a Windows machine so I haven't tried Safari yet but am very pleased to hear that it does have pop-up blocking. Enjoy the show Marcus! Britney |
