Hi A while ago I upgraded my 7600 with new ram, a new G3 card and a new hard drive purchased from OWC. Today I am trying to upgrade to OS X using XPostfacto but Apple Drive setup cannot initialize my hard drive because it was shipped to me initialized with an incompatible utility(FWB Async). Is there a workaround this problem other than buying expensive software? Thanks Laurier |

Why do you have to reinitialize the drive? OS X doesn't use the drivers on the hard drive. Is there a problem with the partition scheme? Did you try to install OS X on the drive? It is possible to install OS X on a different partition or drive than the one you told XPostFacto that you wanted to install to. You could tell XPostFacto that you want to install on that drive, restart into the OS X Installer and try the OS X Disk Utility from there. Maybe it will be able to take over the drive. If you get Disk Utility to reinitialize the drive (don't forget to select the "Install OS 9 Drivers" option) then you should restart into OS 9, erase the new partitions as Mac OS Extended using the OS 9 Finder (just in case Disk Utility doesn't create HFS+ wrappers), run XPostFacto again, select the new partition to install OS X to, restart to the Installer again, and Install OS X using the default install option called "Install Mac OS X" so that it doesn't erase XPostFacto's extensions as "Erase and Install" would. |

It's very nice of you, Marty, but I live in the Eastern part of Canada, in Quebec City to be exact. Thanks |

I know I could buy Hard Disk SpeedTools but it costs well over 100$Can. and I would rather avoid using that solution. I may eventually have to but I will have to be sure that it will work with my drive. Thanks |

You may also want to try Intech's Hard Disk Tools software. It costs $60, but it seems to work with every drive out there, plus you can download it instead of having to find it at a reseller. It can 'take over' the drive in question, removing the FWB driver. Stephen |

HI again Thanks for being so patient with me but I still need your generous help. n fact I don't understand clearly the steps you are referring to. I must say that I am far from being an expert with ResEdit. Here are the details from SCSI probe 5.2: Drive ID: 1, Vendor: Fujitsu, Product: MAA3182SC. vers.: 0109. You say that I should use a generic driver, like from my IBM *; all right, but where and how do I get it? How do I create and rename a new resource ID? Forgive my ignorance Laurier |

Get SCSI Probe (Google it) and see what the drive's ID is and then use a generic driver, like from your "IBM,*", and create a new resource ID. Rename it to be "FUJITSU,*" (from SCSI Probe) and see if that helps. The ,* resources are generic and should work as is; otherwise, edit the resource as per the Mac Troubleshooter website after you've created a new ID. I've done this in the past for Seagates, although newer versions of Drive Setup recognizes those drives. I cannot recall how I had to patch the application as well, but I did that using MacNosy. Good luck. |

Thanks for your great help. Here are some details on my drive: Fujitsu, revision 0109, product code MAA3182SC, size: 18,26 Go. Since Fujitsu is not listed, I tried hacking Apple Drive Setup 2.0.7 using the name brand "IBM', ID 498 but it does not work. What steps should I take from now? Try all the ID's? Are there some drive brands listed that are more likely to work than others? Thanks |

Looks like Resexcellence took down that page for some reason. I did a search via google and came up with this one: http://www.graphixmad.plus.com/mac_troubleshooter/pic_drivesetup_patch.html |

Hi, This is the closest information that I could find on the Resexcellence site: http://www.resexcellence.com/index_archive/index_05-01-99.shtml That info doesn't look too complete, but in that info is a link to this site, which seems to provide more of the information that you are looking for: http://www.cogco.co.uk/drivesetup.html Hope this helps. |

I recall Resexcellence.com has an article on how to patch Apple Drive Setup to recognize any hard drive. You may want to search for it there and try again. The problem you're facing is not how the drive was formatted but what the drive IDs (drive model). |
