I have been using it ever scence 10.2 but in 10.2.2 i noticed it slowed down alot. I was hoping 10.2.3 would fix this but it did not. With Quarts E I got about a 38 on speed test for graphics. with out it i can get 115 with an ATI radeon (I was expecting more from this card, but i think it is a software problem). The real problem is when i listen to music without QE everything else goes slow but game graphics and FPS are much better. with is game graphics and FPS go to hell but i can listen to music with no GUI slow down. ANyone else encounter this problem? I am thinking QE is better but i am not sure yet. Is there a "New" hack? |

it CAN run on our old macs. You have to modify a file from AGP to PCI. My Radeon PCI card can't process the data fast at all. so i just turned it back off. It does do wonders for my GUI proformance but it kills my proformance on anythting that uses graphics. if you want to check it out, the easiest way is with a program called PCI Exteme!. |

Hi guys, I just did some research on this Quartz Extreme thing, and it seems like it's only supported on machines that have AGP graphics cards, excluding our older models. Is this true, or is this just as true as that Apple wants everyone to believe that OS X does not run on PCI based macs? Thanks, Jonck |

avaughs, It is happening now when I have QE enabled but it did not manifest when I was running 10.2-10.2.2. I'm assuming that it is a bandwidth issue on the PCI bus. Why I didn't experience it before 10.2.3 I can't say. I moved my Radeon back to the bottom slot and Xbench is able to complete all of it's tests again. I'm going to try moving the Radeon to the top slot next to see if that helps performance any. I'm getting counterintuitive results with QE enabled with games. I played RtCW again last night for about 90 minutes and didn't have any problems at all running it. Also, ST Voyager: Elite Force also appears to run OK. |

Does anyone else experience "artifacts" in their QuickTime winodws? I'm watching the MWSF03 keynote while typing this post and the browser (Safari) window overlaps the QuickTime viewer window. The result is the QuickTime image window is segmented into 4 parts with the top two parts displaying the keynote and the bottowm to segments displaying the upper left corner of the browser window. The colors for all segment images has a purple'ish color. This only happens when Quartz is activated (using PCI Extreme). If you did experience this problem and you no longer have it, what was your solution? My System: PM7500 with XLR8 CarrierZif 300 Mhz G3/1MB L2 @ 150 Mhz, 432MB (non interleaved RAM). Radeon 7K (PCI slot C1), USB 1.1 card (PCI slot B1) and 1394b card (PCI slot A1). I'm running my display in 1024x768 thousands of colors. |

I think it helps if you are using alot of your processor, but it you are not then it is pointless because PCI video cards are only realy good for the GUI in X. All games that i have run like crap with QE but with out it the are fairly good. You can use PCI exteme! to intall and uninstall it, but it needs a restart. |

Hi guys, Sorry if this question has been answered a dozen times, but since I can't search this forum... From what I've been reading here about it, it seems that Quartz Extreme actually slows things down, why would one use it? Can you disable it through the system preferences? Thanks, Jonck |

I tried the Radeon in slot 4 and it did not help. It actually slowed thinngs down a little. Also, Xbench 1.0b5 would not complete its test cycle. It would hang on the last sequence of tests which measure disk activity. With the card back in the bottom slot it finishes. Curious. |

I actualy used system optimize and made the UI setting verry high, This lets me have almost all of my favorite apps open with minimal GUI slowdown. But if i were doing intencive work on it then i would see another slowdown, but it is good for now. we will see how it runs with 256MB more ram, bringing my total to 664MB or ram. After my first 128MB i thought i would never need ram again...I was wrong. |

for a longtime in 10.2-10.2.1 it improved an amazing amount, but sever sense 10.2.2 it has been dissapointing, iTunes visualizer is SLOW, before with it on i was getting 30-50FPS!!! now with it on or off i get about 5-20. She's starting to show her true colors... |

While I had QE enabled last night I started up Return to Castle Wolfenstein to see if it would still play and it did. it even seemed to run a little better. The only reason I turned it off in 10.2.2 was that it did cause problems for me doing video capture. The quality of the DV video suffered and had sound dropouts. Under 10.2.3 I now see artifacts in the QT player window, whereas under 10.2.2 I did not. Also, iTunes visualizations are a little slower now. One thing that is different about my system configuration is that I moved my Radeon to the bottom PCI slot when I was doing some troubleshooting about a month ago. I have a feeling that If I move the card back up to slot 4, nearer to the PCI bus that I might see a performance increase that'll get me back to where I was with 10.2.2. |

when i run iTunes everything slows down alot with out it, but with it it runs fine. The radeon has the power for the GUI but it can not go it alone in graphics so disabling Quartz E helps alot. I knew it was with a Z too, but my blazing 20 words a min is to fast for my mind :) |

it's Quartz with a Z.... Funny... I have it enabled on my Radeon PCI but haven't really noticed any appreciable speed differences. Marty |
