Can't install on a IBM 9Gig UltraStar |

I have been running OS X Server 10.1.5 on a 7500 with a powerlogic 350 Mhz G3 upgrade. 240 Mbytes Ram with a Quantum 4 Gig HD. It has been working well but I need more disk space. Thus the 9Gig UltraStar. The Ultra Sttar is setup in two partitions. 8Gig and 1. It has a 80 pin -50-pin adapter. It is installed inside the computer on the internal SCSI chain as SCSI unit 1. The 1Gig partition has OS 9,1 and the machine boots just fine from that. I have cloned the quantum drive using psync as I have done with other drives. When I try to boot off of this drive using XPostFacto or install onto this drive off of a CD I get nothing. just a black screen. I have tried various XPostFacto options such as the throtttle (slowing it down) and advanced options(Verbose) and openfirmware not auto-boot. The resutls are the same a black screen. I have also tried moveing the HD to the exteranl buss with the same result. I can run fine off of the Quantum. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks. |

I've tried installing from the CD on another machine (7600) i get the same results; a black screen the monitor is not getting a signal. No broaken glass sound no icons just a black screen. I did get the install to start when I put the new drive on the external SCSI bus. It appeared to go ok for about an hour and then just died with a blue screen. |

Try reinstalling OS X onto this drive via XPF rather than using the cloned image. |

I found the SE jumper That made no difference. This drive is the one Other world computing is selling with a 80/50 adapter. It is at the end the chain both logicly and physically. (I'm about at the end of my chain as well) The drive is not flakey it flat out does not work in X. Works great in 9.( Adapters with active termination cost as much as the drives cost. Might as well talke my loses and install a ide card with new IDE drives. |

You must disable LVD. There may be an SE (single-ended) enable jumper--select that. Your SCA-to-narrow adapter must also terminate the upper 8-bits, even if your drive is in the middle of the chain, or else your drive will spaz out at random. There are inexpensive adapters that do not allow the termination of the upper 8-bits and these may not work reliably in narrow SCSI buses. Try selecting single-ended and placing the drive at the end of the physical chain with active termination enabled and see if this helps. Otherwise if your machine/drive wedges at random intervals, get an SCA-to-narrow adapter with onboard termination. These should allow you to terminate only the upper 8-bits. |

It does day LVD/SE on the lable, But there is not jumper to diable LVD. I have installed jumpers according to IBM site. |

Is your hard disk an LVD drive? If so, have you disabled LVD? IBMs also require the jumper for unit attention be disabled. Check with IBM's website/manual for the drive for more info. Is this drive at the physical end of your SCSI chain? Have you enabled active termination on this drive? My guess is either your termination is incorrect (more thought is required especially if you have either an LVD or wide/SCA drive attached to a narrow SCSI bus) or your 80-to-50 pin adapter is not the correct one. |
