I extracted this from an earlier post about problems getting dvd to work with the radeon 7000 pci. where can I get idvd2 since 1dvd 2.1 requires 1dvd2 on board to install? will idvd work ok with a pci video card and a g4-500. apple store rep says apple wont install superdrive on lessthan g4-800 as too slow. do i need an agp video card (impossible on my g4 beige tower)for the pioneer dvd-rw to work? |

You will definitely need a Promise chip based IDE card (Sonnet Tempo ATA 100, 133, or Tempo Trio 133). I have a Pioneer DVR-104 attached to a Sonnet Tempo ATA 100 card. I also have a Radeon Mac Edition 32MB Video card. They work together seamlessly. I believe the DVD player would work without patching if you are running the DVR-105 on a Promise based card. I haven't tested it that way though because I patched the DVD Player app before I had the Tempo card. The patch enables me to run the DVD player with a Firewire DVD drive though. I only use the Pioneer drive for iDVD burns because it is relatively slow for common usage. For CD burns and DVD viewing I use a Toshiba DVD/CD-RW drive in a Firewire case. This setup works perfectly. You don't need an AGP video card for iDVD but you have to have a G4 processor. Finally, I bought the iDVD 2.1 upgrade a few months ago and it is actually a full install of iDVD. I assume the same will be the case for iDVD 3 included in the iLife suite. Can't wait to get a copy next weekend. |

Looks like you missed the $20 iDVD2 “upgrade and have to buy the $50 iLife package... I can’t find any mention of it on apple’s site As far as using that drive please remember it is NEWER than osx 10.1.x. Support for burning and whatnot with that drive was built into OSX 10.2.x but not present in 10.1.5. In your other posts you've said you have a 10.1.5 partition and a 10.2.3 partition so consider moving over to the 10.2.3 partition. If you want to stay with 10.1.x then be a small hacker and figure out what you have to remove from OSX 10.2.x and install in 10.1.x to support the drive and tell us. You should be able to use pacifist http://www.charlessoft.com/ To install the 3.2 DVD player from your OSX 10.2.x CD Instructions are in the Read me. The 3.2 player should work and recognize the drive as long as you are using it on the built in IDE bus. If you are using an ATA card the DVD player might not be recognized and you would need to get an ATA card with a promise chipset (Sonnet 100 or 133, NOT 66, NOT Acard, NOT sig) or you need to patch the DVD player.. http://www.macbidouille.com/downloads/DVDPlayer_3.2_no_DVD_Cocoa.sit If you are trying to burn something you need OSX 10.2.x OR toast 5.2. Versions earlier don't have support files for a 105 drive. If you are trying to burn with the Drive attached to a non-promise ATA card I don't think it will ever work quite right. In OS9 you can burn with toast 5.2. There is also a modified support file for itunes. http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/software/PioneerDVR105_10_1plugin.sit I haven't tried it but. Lastly iDVD 2.1 Works wonderfully with a radeon 7000 and a Pioneer 105 drive. I don't know how slow a G4 500 would feel (not too shabby) but however slow it may be it certainly won't stop the program from running. Why do you worry so much about what a sales drone says even if they are somehow supposedly a “rep for apple? |

You can order iDVD2 from apple as an "upgrade". They don't check that you have ver 1 in any way and the upgrade costs $20. you might want to jump on that as I'm sure it will disappear after iDVD3 is available. I have iDVD 2 and now I also have a Pioneer 105 drive but I have not tested them togather yet. I also don't have the 2.1 update downloaded right now. I will try them and get back to you, however I have a baby and many social obligations so that might not happen too quickly. There also used to be all sorts of somewhat flakey patches for unsuported systems & iDVD from macboudinel.com but I think with the 105 drive on a promise based IDE controler that might not be nessacery. |
