Installed Jaguar with XPF with some difficulty, but eventually everything is up and running including, usb and firewire ports. Using 9.1 for classic programs. Fast like usual in classic, but sloooow mooo in 0X 10.2.3. Have Sonnet G3 at 500Mhz with 400 MB of ram and small 4 gig HD. Why so slow? My powerbook G3 with OX 10.2.3 running at 333Mhz with 384 MB ram is much faster. I don't expect this old machine to come close to my new desk top G4/ 1GHz DP-but it should open files and the like without being stuck in mud!! Ideas or other options to speed this mule up would very much be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your assist. |

I'd say the problems/solutions are (from my limited knowledge) 1. Check the caches and configuration. Play with settings until you find something that is stable and hopefully faster than what you've got right now. 2. Check DIPs and jumpers (if any) to make sure it is properly set up and at the right clock speed. This kinda ties in with #1, so get everything in order before you start doin stuff. 3. Check your hard drive. It might just be too darn slow for all of the swapping OS X likes to do. When I got my ATA card and a couple of new 5400 RPM drives, it was like night and day. Unfortunately, I got used to the speed and now it seems slow. Maybe look into something faster than that. 4. Add more memory to reduce the swapping to the disk, even with a newer hard disk on a fast controller, RAM is still quite a bit faster and OS X likes as much as it can get. 5. Get a better video card. Take some of the load off the CPU leaving it free for other stuff. 6. Get a G4 upgrade. As I understand it, there is a lot more optimization for AltiVec in 10.2, and if that is true, the interface and other apps should be quite a bit snappier with that functionality present. Sorry I couldn't figure out more things that don't cost $$$, but I'm sure others can cover anything I've missed. -Ian |

You do not mention what is being used to engage the cache on the upgrade card. I am not familiar with the G3 500 but I assume it has an L2 cache that need to be turned on. Options would be Sonnet's software or you could use Ryan's L2 cache config. |
