Password problem after 10.1.5 to 10.2 upgrade |

After upgrading from 10.1.5 to 10.2.1 my administrative (single user) password is lost. 10.2 boots fine but the login screen shows Other as the only choice and when I try to login to my old (on only) 10.1 user account I get the shaking window. Apples solution from the knowledge base is to boot to the install disk and reset the password. However, Xpostfacto doesn't allow that. If I try the install option I get boot up errors. How can I correct this problem? |

Thanks Naturist, I was able to boot from the install drive after waiting for a long startup. I found that if I reset the passwords but did not re-install the system the problem remained. After a fresh password reset and re-install, everything but permissions was fine. I used disk first aid to fix the permissions and now all seems OK, except my XLR8 chache control does not work. I took care of that with L2 config and now am on my merry way. My best guess is that the first installation had a problem in addition to the passwords. The second seems fine it even booted with an automatic login. |

that's funny, it XPostFacto lets me boot up from the install CD. It's been a while since I did that, but as I recall, you need to pretend you are doing a fresh install, and tell it to install from the CD onto the OS X hard drive. When the installer appears, go up to the menu and reset the password. Be aware that there are some passwords that worked in 10.1.5 that 10.2 doesn't like. I don't recall the specifics, but I do recall cases like yours where a password was lost being due to use of one of those types of bad passwords. Stick to the more or less standard alphanumeric passwords and you should be fine. |
