6400 with G3 L3 400 install won't even start |

I have a 6000 with an G3 L2 400 1M, 136MB, 40GB ata, 10GMB SCSI, ATI graphics card, Sony CD RW, Asanti ethernet card, 20 in Sony monitor, on a asanti router ethernet LAN, connected to Sprint broad band. I did fresh install of 9.1 on the reformatted SCSI (no partition) to keep it totally seperate from my other systems, 8.6 and 9.2.2 and a partition for files. When you launch the XPostFacto the window says that the SCSI is not a bootable disk. The ather 3 partitions say not bootable also. The three areas for selecting the target disk and the 2 start buttons are greyed out. If you ignor that and try to install 10.1 you get a window that it can not install. Go read up on the compatible systems. As you can see, I didn't even make square one! Absolutely nothing happened, no freeze, no white screen, no rainbow, nothing! This is my first post so it will take me a bit to understand how you all work. |

Sorry, I misunderstood your post. I thought you had already gotten XPost installed and rebooted from the OSX CD. Not having evet attempted to install OSX on a 6400 I really have no knowlege to speak from. But again, I'll point you to the Zone6400. http://www.zone6400.com/files/installing_OSX.html There is alot of information there that may or may not help you. Good luck. Scott |

I am not booting from OSX becaus OSX has never been installed. If I try to boot from the OSX CD I just go back into OS9. |

Sheldonrl, If you haven't done so already check out Thomas Koons website at www.zone6400.com. He has alot of information regarding the 6400 and OSX. To my knowlege, thoe only successful installs of OSX on the 6400 have been done by installing OSX on another old world machine and then migrating the HD to the 6400. Also, To clarify on the L2/G3, you are correct in saying that the 603e is "turned off" but remember that occurs when the control panel is loaded during startup. Since you are booting from the OSX Install CD the control panel is not loaded and therefore the G3 is not running. Scott |

Come back and check it out soom. Ryan (OSXGuru) is going to be out for a bit but when he comes back he will tell you for sure. When i was doing it he said he did not update that much. also it may be supported with XPF 3 which will be out a few weeks after he comes back. |

Well, I am running the G3 upgrade so I thought there was a posibility. There are other places in the text which mentioned various things about G3 upgraded systems. I don't know if your aware, but just after boot up, the old processor is completely off. If you go to the system profiler it identifies the processer as a G3 at 400Mhz. I think you can see how I might get the idea that it might work. Anyway, if you do run across any information, please pass it along. Thanks Bob |

I don't know if this has changed but the copatibility site (on OWC at the top of the screen) says "5400, 5500, 6300, 6360, 6400, 6500 Unsupported, but in progress. The main problem is that SCSI and Ethernet are not working, which makes installation difficult. Also, will not work with Mac OS X 10.2, because of 603 CPU." so if this is true you are out of luck. sorry. |

First, thanks for the quick reply. When you launch the Xpostfacto program you get a panel with 4 areas. The top left says start OSX from. Under is a window in which you can choose any disk (disk partition) or the CDR containing the OSX install disk. No matter which disk or the CDR you always get the same comment"install(whichever disk or ROM you selected}is not bootable (Mac OSX is not installed)" The other 3 areas: restart, install OSX to, and install remain greyed out. The operation does not go further no matter what I tried. I tried all of the pull down window options and even tried to install OSX dirrectly from the install disk, Nothing! |

I may be wrong but it sounds like you don't get how the interface is set up. The top half where it says start form (or something like that.) is where you tell it what disc is your install disc and then the botom half is the disc you want to install to. after you get it installed the top half is were you tell it to rebootback to OSX. You may know this but it sounded unclear in your post. Jim |

Yes, it is Mac OS extended. You know, I have never heard of an internal disk being unbootable. Every time I boot the system it boots from one of them. This is my first day trying so I guess I shouldn't get discouraged yet. Thanks Bob |

First thing to check is whether the drive/partition on which you are attempting to install is HFS or HFS+. OS X can only be installed on HFS+ drives. Use GetInfo to find out (hit command-i and it'll tell you either Mac OS or Mac OS extended - the latter is HFS+). |
