Anyone know of a cheap way to add wifi to an older mac? I can't install an airport card, obviously, and I can't seem to find a USB wifi adapter that has mac drivers. anyone have an idea? mike |

I have had great results on my 3400 powerbook with a pcmcia Orinoco silver wi-fi card. I also got a PCI to PCMCIA adapter so I can use it on my 6400 as well. It comes with drivers for OS 8.0 to 8.6. I'm using it on OS 9.1 with Airport software. |

macsense.com has a USB-wifi, but expensive (~$100 on their website). Hope they don't go under for poor marketing and pricing strategy. I'd go with the Belkin. The Linksys WAP11 can work as a client, but caution, only with another WAP11 acting as the access point. But the newer WET11 works as a general client. Yesterday's XLR8YOURMAC.com had instruction for modifying the Belkin driver to work with a netgear with the same chipset. I coudn't get the procedure to work (yet) with my Linksys WUSB11 (which also has the same chipset). |

Belkin makes a USB-based WiFi system (Model #F5D6050) that comes with drivers for MacOS X. $75 new, $38 refurb. Tony |

I'm using Cisco PCI342s with good results under OS 9.1, 9.2, and X in my 9500s PCI slot. I'm not sure if they ship with Mac drivers, but you can download them from www.cisco.com |

I got the Linksys wireless bridg too, absolutly no drivers but you need a PC to set it up with you wireless network but after that it is good to go with NO drivers which i think is one of its best features - less crap on you hard drive. |

I've got a Linksys WET11 bridge that will work with pretty much any DHCP 10baseT ethernet device. I'm planning on using it with a SLIMP3 player, with the host being (hopefully) an old 7500. The only disadvantage is that the WET11 is about $110, as opposed to the $60 bridge mentioned earlier. |

I had the same problem. I ended up buying a refurbished D-Link DWL-900AP bridge for $60, which also can work as a client (although I had to configure it on a PC). It plugs into the ethernet port on my 8500. Now I can access the internet upstairs without the temporary "ghettonet" I had running up the stairs... If you buy a bridge make sure it can work as client as well. I don't believe it will allow you to communicate with your network if it doesn't have this capability. Terrance |

On my 7600s, I've used the old Farrallon, now Proxim, Skyline PCMCA card & PCI adapter with Mac OS 9.x. Unfortunately, there are no s/w drivers for X for using a PCMCA card with a PCI adapter. I got mine a Smalldog.com garage sale. Unfortunately, that's it for the olde world desktop models. And, only using 9.x. However, I am running Orinoco Gold Card successfully in my 3400 PB using the Orinoco drivers. --Dwight |
