Do I need XPF for a OWC-G4 upgraded Beige G3 -Jag? |

I'll be getting a Beige G3 that has an OWC G4 installed. I want to do a clean install of Jag. when I get it. Is it necessary to use XPF for the install, or can I boot right from the CD, and everything will be happy? I've used XPF in my 9500 w/Sonnet G3 before, but the Beige G3 is supported by Apple. I've heard conflicting reports about NVRAM not being written to properly without using XPF in this scenario. Thanks! |

I am running a Beige G3/266 upgraded with OWC G4/500 ZIF and have had no problems installing Jaguar from the CD. I use Powerlogix cache control X to enable the cache. |

I just aquired a Beige 266 G3, an OWC 450 G4 ZIF, and a Pioneer DVR105 and want to make all of these work with OS X. I needed to use XPostfacto to be able to install OS X (Jag 10.2.3), it wouldn't work without it. I do have other issues, but will create a new thread if I can't find the answer. |

I'm not sure, but I think both Sonnet and XLR8 had a special OS 9 extension to select the boot disk for G4-upgraded beige G3s (XPF also can do the job). Also, some kind of special boot floppy to fix corrupted NVRAM that might occur occasionally. See Sonnet's web site. There is also a mention on OWC's tech support page of a rare incompatible voltage controller made by Royal, in about 2% of the beige G3s. This is a destructive incompatiblity (frys the G4 processor). I guess if you are buying it already installed and tested, it shouldn't be a problem. |

If you have the scsi version of the G3 beige you need to flash the rom on the Atto UW PCI card for it to be able to run OS X. |

cdomanski-- I have never had a problem installing OS X onto a beige g3 direct from a CD--any version. In OS X 10.1.0, the CD will work okay, but to apply the updates from Apple, you need to be sure to download and install the "Installer Update 1.0" and all security updates preceeding the release of the 10.1.1 update (these are available from the OS X downloads/Apple on Apple's website). The original OS X 10.1 installer will not install the updates from 10.1.1 and onwards. Depending on the behavior of the OWC G4 ZIF, you may want to consider using the L2CacheConfig enabler from OWC/Ryan Rempel. That little utility has worked wonders for the 3 rd party ZIF's I have used in the beige g3's. Let us know how you come out--Mark |

Theoretically you don't need XpostFacto to install X on a Beige G3 whether it is processor upgraded or not. It worked this way with OSX 10.0 for me but I could never get 10.1 to install onto my Beige G3 without XpostFacto. |
