How to Initialize an "unsupported" Drive? |

Just received an 18 gig IBM HD from OWC but Apple Drive Setup won't initialize it (says it's not supported); therefore I can't run XPF; therefore I can't use it for the purpose I intended. I know I could spend $60 and get InTech HDST, but then the drive would have cost me $150. Ouch! How can I reformat this drive to accept initialization? Is there something in the jumper configuration I can change? Thanks much. m. PS: the "new" drive came w/absolutely NO Documentation. Nice :( |

Success! The ResEdit hack worked like a charm! I'd never used ResEdit before and it was really easy to do. I'm going to keep that copy of Drive Setup and name it "ZJCS Drive Setup" or "IBM Drive Setup" in case I need it again. Thanks to Alan for the tip. Best, m. |

I ran into the same problem when I purchased a 36G drive from OWC. I ended up getting the HDST, but later I ran across something that talked about using ResEdit to edit Drive Setup in OS 9, and then formatting the drive from there. If memory serves, there is a table in Drive Setup that contains the "Drive names" that are supported (fSCR?). However, I don't think there are different parameters for the drives, just a list of supported drives. You need to use the System profiler to get the name of your drive, and then replace it for one of the supported drives. My IBM drive shows up as a "ZJCS" for the vendor, and "ZJCS2-36GB" for the product name. I would try changing the fSCR entry for "IBM,*" to "ZJCS,*" and see if that works. As always, make a copy of Drive Setup before using ResEdit, and then run the copy. If it works, great, if not, you didn't hurt anything. I can't say for sure if this will work, but I think that is a summary of what I saw on the net... E-mail me if you need more help... |

You could try Intechs Demo to start the installation and i know that OSX has better support so you may be able to have it initialize the drive but i would not know what would happen when you need OS9 and the 30 day trial is up... there are also a few Hacks for drive setup that i have heard of but i never tried them and i only remember hearing about them, i don't know the name or anything like that so you may need to look around a bit. http://www.macfaq.de/macfaqdaten/minifaqs/dspg.html this may help. when XPF3 comes out you could get a firewire case for it so you could take advantage of firewire's faster speed and i believe that drive set up will see it as the chip set you have, not the actual drive. Apple system profiler sees my IBM deskstar firewire hard drive as an Oxford-911 (that is the chip set). but you would still need a second drive (I think that is the way firewire booting will be...) to "assist" the booting process. Hope something helps. |
