New Posts: 20 PowerMac 8600/300 Mac OS 9.1.x Hi I have an 8600/300 which will not accept any memory in the A1 to A4 memory slots. In fact, if I install 4 128 megs EDO modules in slots B1 to B4, the machine works fine. But any ram installed in the A1 To A4 slots keeps the machine from booting up. Is my computer damaged or is there a trick I am not aware of? Thanks |

I thought you'd be interested to know what was wrong with my computer. The culprits were two ram modules which I did not suspect since they were brand new. A ram check utility sent by a participant on this topic helped me identify the problem. The motherboard of my computer is fine. Sincere thanks to all of you. |

If you've never upgraded your RAM and you own the Mac for "some time," it's possible your RAM edge contacts are dirty with dust. Get one of those compressed air canisters and give it a good amount of air, then retry. The contacts may be stubborn and your RAM aren't installed all the way in. Finally, it may be that your connectors are defective. |

If it boots OK with RAM in the A sockets from a CD, but not from the Hard disk, then your hard disk drivers are a good possibility of a problem... Try using a differnet hard disk drive, and formatting it with Drive Setup from MAC OS 9.1... Marty |

Hmmm, from your original posting, it sounds like you can not boot when any memory is in A1-A4. Is this true for 0S 9? If so, then two things could cause this: First, you've added memory which might be on the ragged edge of working (one or more modules), and/or, second, you've got a bad motherboard. Send me an email and I'll send you a OS 9 ram checking utility. --Dwight |

New details I ran this test lately. I installed 4x128 megs chips as follows: A1&B1, A2&B2. The computer will boot properly only with a startup cd in the cd drive. But I cannot install any software from the cd. Does this shed any new light? It's a computer I have had for some time but I had never tried to upgrade the memory until now. Thanks Laurier |

i know that some upgrade manufacturers sayh not to interleave ram. that could be your problem. |

Yes, it sounds like a motherboard problem. I have an 8600 and have had 1G at one time with it working fine. Did U recently buy the 8600? Or did this just happened? You should probably take it to repair facility to get it checked out. Or look for another motherboard on eBay. |

I think you probably have a motherboard problem. I have a 7200 upgraded with the 7500/7600 motherboard, which is supposed to be identical to the 8500/8600 motherboard, and I have all 8 slots occupied with 128 Mb DIMMs, and it runs like a champ. (knocking on wood) |

I know I have a similar problem when booting to OS 9.1. Usually while the machine is still on I press ctrl-cmd-start to reboot it and then my 7300 with a Sonnet G4/400 boots properly. I thought it was an issue with the hard drive drivers (for me) but maybe not. |
