I am thinking about getting a Sonnet G4/ 800 Mhz PCI card. Right now I have a Newer Tech G4/400 Mhz card on a PTP machine, do u guys think it will be worth it? I mean the speed will be much faster? Specially OS X seems a little sluggish now. Gabby |

http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/archives/oct02/103102.html The 32x and 25x multipliers have since been removed from the documentation (Jan 2003) because they were not supported but with a 28x multiplier, a maximum cpu clock of 1.4GHz is possible. I don't think it would be too difficult for Sonnet to use a faster chip in their PCI Mac upgrades. They already sell 1.2GHz cpus for AGP Macs at $670. Would you buy a $700 1.2GHz upgrade for your PTP? How much would a 50MHz bus kill the performance of a GHz cpu? |

I had a I had an XLR8 G4/450 for only a few months when the Sonnet G4/800 was announced. I thought it was worth it for my uses. I saw a good jump in performance in everyday system tasks, such as opening windows and menus, application launch times, mp3 encoding, iMovie and Final Cut render speeds, etc. I would also recommend having a lot of RAM and a Radeon video card to realize the full potential of the card. If you have the extra money to spend and want to have a useable OSX system while you are saving for something new then I would say it's worth it. It's an individual judgement call but I can't see any downside except for the cost. |
