Hello everyone! I am still having trouble getting my 9600/350 to boot X with the latest version of XPostFacto. The machine restarts after I select "Install" from the program; however, the system locks-up once I see the blank, white open firmware screen. I rebooted into 9.2.2, unchecked "Auto-boot?", and forced the system to prompt me of the firmware's booting process. I get the message when I type "BOOT": BOOT DEFAULT CATCH!, code=FFF00300 I've tried playing around with the settings in XPostFacto, thinking I might be able to get around this catch, but I have not succeeded. It seems that people who try to install Linux on Macs have encountered this error, but it is often followed with more information. Can you all offer any advice? I've tried removing cards, removing RAM and removing cards without success. The "boot catch" is basically an Open Firmware error (Open Firmware is what controls the earliest part of the boot process in Mac OS X). Unfortunately, they can be a little difficult to track down. One common culprit relates to combinations of PCI cards, or even PCI card location. Removing PCI cards, or even switching them around, can help. It's a little like voodoo, unfortunately. Or at least seems that way--I suppose there always is a rational explanation somewhere. |

"sh-2.05a#" is the single user prompt. I think you can type exit to continue booting. Make sure you don't have the Single User option turned on in XPostFacto before booting OS X. |

I'm trying to install OS X.2 on a Umax J700. I have a ahard PCI ata card, with an IBM 80gb 7200rpm w/8mb buffer formated with apple drivers on an 7.5gb partition it is on the 1st partition of this drive that I'm trying to install X the install seemed to be going better this time than in the past attempts. I get to a black screen with white type. That loads up to this promt. Mar 26 17:30::40 init: ignoring excess arguments Root device is mounted read-only Filesystem checks skipped sh-2.05a# then it stops Also I am using a Radeon 7000 with the newest drivers. A Apple scsi CD Rom Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You all rschroeder1@cox.net |

I would take out all PCI cards and try to install on your internal SCSI bus. |

Tempest, I am using the stock SCSI CD-ROM drive. I can hear both hard drives and the CD-ROM sping up, but the CD-ROM drives stops spinning about thirty seconds after the error appears. It seems XPostFacto is causing the the open firmware (version 1.0.5) to crash somehow. Please let me know if you have any more ideas. Thanks, P |

What model is your CD-ROM drive? Is it an Apple drive? The other thing is are you sure your LVD drive is spinning up by itself when you power on and has settled before your Mac starts to boot? Are you using a CD-RW in a drive that only reads CDs and CD-Rs? |

Joevt, I tried you suggestions, and here is a synopsis of the results. Sadly, none of them allowed me to boot the Mac OS X installer. :/ 1) I tried to install X to the Seagate Cheetah that is connected to the 2940U2B Card. I had the same results that I listed in my first post: BOOT DEFAULT CATCH!, code=FFF00300. No additional details about the boot error were given with the command-v keyboard command. 2) I tried to install X to the sock IBM drive that is still connected the 9600's internal SCSI bus. I did not receive the boot default catch error; however, the system simply froze after I entered "boot" at the prompt. Again, I did not receive any details about the booting process once I initiated command-v. Boot information listed in XPostFacto 2.2.5 for IBM drive: boot-device: scsi-int/@0:6 boot-file: -i boot-command: 0 bootr -v rd=*scsi-int/@3:9 3) I had the same results in 9.1 and 9.2.2. Please let me know if you have any additional suggestions. Many thanks, Porter |

Try doing the same thing again except after you type boot, immediately hold down command-v. Maybe you'll see more Open Firmware output from BootX if it gets that far. Note that this is different than selecting verbose mode in XPostFacto. Also try OS 9.1 and a different drive not connected to the 2940U2B. There shouldn't be a problem with the 2940U2B because OS X has a driver for it (Adaptec78XXSCSI.kext) which supports 3950U2B, 2940U2B, 2930CU, 2930U, 2940U2W, and 2940UW. I'm just looking at the plist so I'm not really sure. I have a 2940U2W in a box somewhere but I've never tried it with OS X. |
