Does anyone think or know of any new Sonnet G4 cards coming out (PCI), I know the max right now is 800 Mhz (for PCI macs). I want to buy one but I don't want find out about a new 1 Ghz card right after I buy the 800 Mhz one. Gabby |

To echo marcush, I haven't heard of any 1000Mhz G4's upgrades in the pipe for PCI powermacs. The Rev2.1 7455 chip I've seen in the Sonnet 800 does have a maximum multiplier of 16X however if they ever used a Rev3.6? 7455 chip in the same design card the maximum multiplier would jump to 32X. more realistic multipliers might be 20X I have a page about trying it. http://users.erols.com/jslewis/Josh/sonnet.html I've wanted to add a lot more info like voltage boosts and attempts replacing the clock chip but I haven't had a camera and I haven't had really good sucess overclocking anything but the cache. Sadly my card feels really really used now. The deal mac info was interesting. I would have thought the 700 was also a 7455, can anyone with the 700Mhz card confirm that it's a 7451 chip? |

if if has a multiplier of 28x then i would expect that sonnet would put out a new card. I think that the last version was around 18x. |

The Motorola specs show the latest MPC7455 has a maximum bus multiplier of 28x which would allow a cpu speed of 1.4GHz. |

I don't think that it is possable without overclocking the system bus quite a bit. 800MHZ i think is the highest ratio that you can get with old world PCI macs (the ratio is bus to Processor speed). The only other way would be if Moto put out a new G4 with a higher ratio but i dout it unless the one they judt put out that is more energy efficient has a higher ratio. The G4 is dead and Moto would not see any profit from redesigning it again, but who knows they might. |

I haven't seen any announcements or speculation about an impending release at all on a 1 GHz upgrade for our Macs. There was a posting in the dealmac forums yesterday from someone commenting on the 800Mhz card he recently got. He was talking about characteristics of both the 700 and 800Mhz model. It is very informative and can be found at this URL: http://dealmac.com/forums/read.html?f=1&i=1109946&t=1106708 To sum up, I don't expect to see a GHz upgrade for pre-G3 Macs but who knows Sonnet might surprise us. |
