Hi there, can anybody help me to run OSX on my old Mac? I installed 10.2 without any problems on my 8500, but it will not boot. I get a panic error just after the boot image. Please look at the screenshot-image on my iDisk: http://homepage.mac.com/blackinliner/FileSharing2.html My computer: 8500, littleJoe G3/416Mhz/52Mhz, 160 MB RAM (A1_128, B1_32), 4 MB Video-RAM, 2 GB IBM SCSI-HD+Apple CD-600on internal SCSI-Bus. Thanks for any reply |

The 32M DIMM would be a good place to start. Many G3/G4 upgrades require more precise memory than the 601/604's they replaced. RAM that worked fine before the CPU upgrade can cause problems because of the timing of the new processor. Many of the 128M and some of the 64M DIMMs will work fine because they are newer and have faster RAM chips on them. DIMMs below 64M are quite iffy and often the cause of problems. OSX seems to amplify the problem. I have some 16M DIMMs that work fine in OS9 but crap out in OSX. I agree with rjenness, pull the 32M DIMM and see if that helps. If you need to add more RAM check with OWC. They have 64M and 128M DIMMS that are 100% guranteed to work with G3/G4 upgrades. |

If I understand your post, you are running a G3 at 416 MHz and have set the bus speed to 52 MHz. I believe that is your problem. These machines are famously unable to operate at bus speeds above 50 MHz. And OS X is very sensitive to RAM issues, which would be amplified by such as setting. Throttle it back to 400 MHz and 50 MHz, and I bet it'll work. The microscopic difference between 400 and 416 MHz (and most especially between 50 MHz and 52 on the bus) won't be noticeable, but the stability of the system will be vastly better. I, too, have a similar system 7500/G4-400/50MHz/1 Gb RAM, and it is rock solid. |

All that white crap at the top of the screen makes me wonder about your memory.... Try removing as much ram as possible (leave 128M). Marty |

I can't really help but I thought I could offer a bit of encouragement with a similar system that works. PowerMac 8500 w Sonnet Crescendo PCI G3/450MHz/45MHz, 320 MB RAM (A4_128, B4_128, A3_32, B3_32), 2 MB VRAM + ATI Rage 128 (16 MB) dual monitors, 2 * 2 GB Conner HD + Apple 600i on internal SCSI. I was running 9.2.2 thanks to OS9Helper. Very solid! Reformatted one of my 4 GB drives with Mac OS 9 Disk Setup and installed Jaguar 10.2.1 using XPostFacto 2.2.5. Once booted I upgraded to 10.2.4. The install process was very long (about six hours with all the optimizations) Everything works very well and I've never seen a kernel panic. Hang in there! I'm sure you'll get it going. (BTW what drivers are on the disk? the XPF faq indicated that could be a problem area. Maybe my success was because it was on a freshly formatted drive.) Rob |
