I am trying to install OS 10.1.5 onto a PowerTower Pro w/ the orig 604e 200mhz in it using the newest version of XPF. I have orig 1mb L2 Cache installed. 352mb RAM interleaved. 2GB seagate drive running OS 9.1 from which I am running XPF 2.2.5. I am trying to Install OS X onto a seagate 4GB drive formatted w/ Apple drive setup (1 volume no partitions. When I open XPF w/ the OS X CD inserted into the Matshita CD drive and choose the OS X CD as the 'start Mac OS X from' volume, as directed in the XPF guide says, XPF tells me that "The 'Mac OS X Install CD'can only be used as an installer." I select my 4 gig drive as the drive to install into and click "Install" as directed. I sit back and watch (as directed) an I see extensions and kernels being installed. The machine shuts down and restarts to a black screen. I have to zap the pram to get the machine to restart in OS 9. Help!? Thanks in advance Gary |

I have an 8500 , you might try removing all the PCI cards and add them back after you get your machine up and running. I am using the built in video and multiple SCSI drives, from 9 to 43 gig, CD and burner. Currently running on an XLR8- 500-G3 but started with a 200mhz 604. I remember it took many tries and a sleepless night to get OSX to initially install but it has been so long ago I don't remember everything I did. I do remember I removed everything that wasn't required off the machine. I also seem to remember when I did finally get signed up to this forum (just after it had crashed so there were few postings) that there was some discussion of problems with that video card. ANOTHER DESPIRATE PLEA FOR A SEARCH FUNCTION> PLEEEEASE!!!!!! so much valuable information is burried in there. |

If it works with a 604e but fails with a G4, then the most likely cause is a problem with memory. The G4 sometimes exposes problems with DIMMs that were OK with the 604e. So you could try swapping out some memory to see if that helps. Another possibility is that adjusting the "throttle" setting in XPostFacto could help. A higher throttle setting slows down the CPU in the earliest part of the boot process, which sometimes helps with certain issues, especially with some SCSI drives. |

I read somewhere that your video card may not work. Have you tried to de-interleave the memory? Terrance_hod: did you make a PC Radeon 7000 card work in a Mac? How was that? How did you flashed it? Is that hard to get the firmware file? Works in OS9? |

I have a PoweMac 7300/180 with a Sonnet Cresecendo G4/700 upgrade card installed. I have the same issue with XPF control panel saying 'Mac OS X CD can only be used as an installer". When I run the installer and the machine eventually reboots, it hangs. Pressing Control-V shows the kernel panic message which includes the line "panic cpu(0): unable to find driver for this platform: "AAPL,7500". The strange thing is that I successfully installed OS X v 10.1.3 with my original CPU card (180MHz 604e) on the motherboard. When I swap the processor to the Cresecendo G4, I can't boot into OS X. Yes, I did the CUDA reset thing and even have OS X installed on an 8 Gig partition as recommended by Sonnet Tech. Re-installing OS X with the G4 card in place hasn't been successful but when I revert top the 604e CPU, I can boot up into OS X again. My full config is as follows: - PowerMac 7300/180, 400MB RAM, 37Gig HD (3 partitions), 12X Apple CD-ROM drive, ATI Xclaim VR video card. |

hmmm, make sure your SCSI drive/chain is properly terminated also. If you have a different video card you might try it, but the IMS TT128 works fine for me... Strange. Marty PS I do think at least one other guy did have some video issue with the TT128, but I think it was related to the Sonnet G4/800. |

Just a guess, but the video card may the problem. I don't think it's supported (I least that I thought I saw on previous postings--**dead horse beating alert** I think if we had the searching capability in the forum you could easily verify this). I recently got another 9500 and it came with a twin turbo; I didn't even bother with it and got a PC Radeon 7000 card and flashed it. You would be safe if you had an ATI card in it; You'll be better off paying the extra $50 and getting the ATI card; The more stuff you have supported by the current operating system without particular drivers the less headaches you'll have with your installation. |

What is your monitor connected to? Did you set the output-device option in XPostFacto? Try waiting at least 10 minutes for the black screen to go away. |
